This is a new and exciting opportunity at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, within the expanding Radiation Protection department, supporting a wide variety of non-ionising radiation modalities with an emphasis on ultrasound.

We are looking for somebody with knowledge and understanding of medical ultrasound who can help to deliver and develop our quality assurance programme covering a wide range of clinical applications over multiple departments and sites, including both NHS and private hospitals. There are also opportunities to support teaching and training programmes and to get involved with research and development activities.

Additional knowledge of other areas of non-ionising radiations would be desirable, as the service supports MRI, lasers and phototherapy services and there is potential for the post holder to become involved with any or all of these areas.

You will join a well-established and supportive team of Clinical Scientists in the radiation protection team that support the provision of both ionising and non-ionising modalities. The Radiation Protection Section sits within the growing Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Department at Royal Berkshire Hospital.

Your role will be assisting in the delivery of ultrasound, laser, blue-light, UV therapies, and MR services within two large NHS district general hospitals, two community hospitals, and various smaller establishments including 5 private hospitals and a community dental service.

Main duties of the job

The main purpose of this post is to provide Non-Ionising Radiation (NIR) Physics support for diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound services. The ability to support MR, UV and blue light phototherapy and lasers is also desirable.

The post holder will provide scientific quality assurance support to clinical services in the Trust and a range of external NHS bodies and private hospitals to which the Radiation Protection Department is contracted. There will also be opportunities to contribute to teaching and service development projects.

The post requires knowledge of the scientific, technical, and safety aspects of non-ionising radiation (NIR) physics, primarily ultrasound and its clinical applications. The post holder must be able to act independently to develop scientific and technical solutions to meet the diverse requirements of a constantly evolving specialist NIR service.

  • Already a B5 or B6 clinical technologist
  • Substantial experience in ultrasound
  • Experienced in other NIR modalities
