We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated and experienced Registered Nurse to join the Acute Pain Service (APS) as a Junior Sister / Charge Nurse (Band 6). Based within Theatres and Recovery, you will support the delivery of high-quality acute pain management for inpatients across the Trust. This role offers the opportunity to develop both clinical expertise and leadership skills within a specialist service. You will play a key role in ensuring safe, effective, and patient-centred pain management, supporting advanced analgesic techniques and contributing to education, quality improvement, and service development.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will provide specialist advice, support ward teams, and help maintain high standards of care in line with Trust values and evidence-based practice. You should be a registered professional with clinical and management experience relevant to the role of a lead nurse. This might include band 6 or above level experience working in the Acute Pain Service, Recovery, Critical Care or Surgical wards and a background in supporting teaching and quality improvement. We would want you to enhance our team by supervising and supporting junior staff through mentoring, clinical supervision, and reflective practice, taking charge of the APS as required, supporting workload prioritisation and coordination and promoting a positive team culture and collaborative multidisciplinary working.
Main Duties of the Job
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care in line with APS standards
- Coordinate and deliver advanced pain management (e.g. epidural, PCA) safely and effectively
- Provide education and information to patients and carers to support informed choices
- Monitor analgesic prescriptions and ensure accurate APS documentation
- Maintain a safe clinical environment and support adherence to APS protocols
- Promote effective communication between APS and ward teams
- Act as a specialist resource for acute pain management across the Trust
- Contribute to teaching and training programmes for nursing and multidisciplinary staff
- Maintain own clinical competence and support staff development and appraisal processes
- Participate in competency assessment and promote a learning environment
- Contribute to audit, research, and quality improvement initiatives within the APS
- Support development and implementation of evidence-based practice, guidelines, and care pathways
- Assist in monitoring standards of care and driving service improvements
- Support effective use of staffing and resources within the service
- Contribute to recruitment, appraisal, and team development processes
- Demonstrate awareness of resource management and service efficiency
Qualifications
Essential criteria: RGN Part 1, 2, BSc in Nursing, Recognised Qualification in Teaching/Assessing
Desirable criteria: Post registration qualification preferably in specialty area, Non Medical Prescriber Qualification
Knowledge
Essential criteria: Relevant clinical experience at Band 5 or above, Demonstrable experience of taking charge of ward/department and staff
Desirable criteria: Experience of Band 6 Sister/CN role, Experience of working in Chronic Pain/Pain Management
