Overview

This is a unique role and secondment opportunity within the Trust. The post holder will rotate around 2 specialties over a 14-month period. The post holder will gain experience caring for patients with cancer in both medical haematological/oncological and surgical oncology settings. They will provide direct support to patients with a cancer diagnosis as well as supporting their families and carers under the supervision of an experienced cancer nurse specialist. They will follow the patient through their cancer pathway, signposting them to services and other avenues of support along the way, including referral to specialist services such as specialist palliative care as appropriate. The post holder will develop skills in delivering personalised care and support to individual patients. They will learn skills in advising on the management of treatment specific side effects as well as supporting patients through the decision-making process.

The post holder will be a registered general nurse with a genuine interest in cancer nursing and developing their career to become a Cancer Nurse Specialist. (CNS)

The successful candidates will work within the ACCEND (aspirant cancer career, education and development) framework throughout the year and will be supported to evidence and complete relevant capabilities within this time. They will be allocated a buddy and supervisor to assist with this.

Main duties and responsibilities

Clinical – communication and relationships

  • Demonstrate politeness, courtesy and sensitivity in providing compassionate care for patients, visitors/relatives and colleagues.
  • Contribute towards sharing good practice within the multidisciplinary team.
  • Promote positive image of the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust at all times.
  • Work cohesively with all members of the multidisciplinary team and promote effective liaison with the team in ensuring the very best services to patients are provided at all times.
  • Communicate effectively within the multidisciplinary team, participate in motivating and supporting team members and maintain confidentiality with patients and carers. Give written and verbal advice/teaching to patients and carers.

Clinical – patient care

  • Support patients within the specific tumour sites by providing information and guidance around diagnosis and treatment options.
  • Carry out holistic assessment of all care needs for their patients and develop personalised care plans to meet those needs. This will include referral to other discipline including specialist palliative care when appropriate.
  • Put quality at the heart of practice by supporting evidence based individualised and person-centred care.
  • Monitor and review the effectiveness of interventions with the patient and liaise with other members of the team to support effective patient care.
  • Advise and review medication for therapeutic effectiveness, appropriate to patient needs and in accordance with evidence-based practice and national and practice protocols and legislation, within scope of practice.
  • Work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to support patient centred care
  • Support health care professionals to provide appropriate care for patients in the setting most appropriate for the patient and their carers.
  • Support patient and carers’ communication issues and co-ordination of the patient pathway.
  • To act as a positive role model for nurses within the trust through the demonstration of excellent communication skills and clinical skills.
  • Support service development, ensuring the pursuit of excellence in care.
  • Through supervision and support, develop the skills to analyse and respond to complex clinical situations, utilising knowledge to assess a range of options to formulate solutions and recommendations.
  • Ensure own and appropriate others’ knowledge of NMC standards and Trust professional guidelines and that these are applied to practice.
  • Work clinically as part of the nursing team, to share experiences, knowledge and skills.

Professional Development And Education Responsibilities

  • Prioritise own workload and competing priorities ensure effective time management strategies are embedded into practice.
  • Demonstrate high level of clinical skills through breadth and depth of knowledge.
  • Ensure all records are accurate, complete and permanent in line with Trust Policy and NMC requirements, including the recording of activity in patients notes or the electronic patient record.
  • Monitor effectiveness of own clinical practice through audit and peer review.
  • Identify and agree objectives for own professional development which reflect local and national service needs.
  • Maintain and develop own knowledge skills within the speciality through a planned approach to continuing professional development, in line with service objectives.
  • Actively participate in annual appraisal with line manager, attending interim meetings as required to review performance and job plan.

Education / Research / quality improvement

  • Support training for other professionals within the Trust and within the scope of practice.
  • Actively reflect on own practice through clinical supervision/mentorship
  • Actively participate in and support the team quality improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain own and others’ awareness of relevant research evidence relating to speciality and participate in applying this to practice.
  • Support review of local evidence-based standards, policies and guidelines for palliative and end of life care.
  • Collaborate with other members of the healthcare team in relevant research and audit activities related to the speciality.
  • Maintain records of the clinical service to assist in the audit of professional and policy standards.
  • Maintain mechanisms to support patient involvement and feedback related to the speciality.
  • Identify areas of risk and poor quality and address these through appropriate governance structures and forums.

Leadership

  • Ability to manage workload based on flexible principles and prioritise care based on clinical need.
  • Act as a role model for nursing demonstrating high standards of care.
  • Monitor health, safety and security of self and others and promote best practice in clinical areas.

  • With support from the team and lead nurse support implementation and monitoring of adherence to relevant clinical guidelines.
