Overview
The purpose of this role is to assist in the delivery of high-quality respiratory physiology diagnostic and monitoring services to patients, under supervision. The post-holder will perform routine respiratory function tests and contribute to sleep diagnostic services, supporting accurate diagnosis and effective patient management.
Main duties and responsibilities
Clinical & Technical
- Perform and interpret routine respiratory investigations in accordance with ARTP/BTS standards, including:
- Spirometry
- Lung volumes and gas transfer
- Bronchodilator reversibility testing
- Oximetry
- Assist with six minute walk tests
- Assist in the set-up of sleep studies
- Ensure equipment is appropriately maintained, calibrated, and safe for use
- Maintain accurate records of investigations and ensure timely entry of results onto clinical systems
- Contribute to audit and quality assurance activities
Patient Care
- Provide a high standard of care and reassurance to patients during physiological testing
- Explain procedures clearly to patients, addressing any concerns and ensuring informed consent
- Promote patient dignity, comfort, and safety at all times
Professional
- Work in line with departmental policies, procedures, and ARTP/NHS best practice guidance
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with NHS and Trust policies
- Participate in continued professional development (CPD) and training
- Assist senior staff in research, service development, and student training as appropriate
Governance & Safety
- Adhere to infection control policies and ensure safe working practices in all areas
- Report equipment faults, incidents, or risks promptly in line with Trust policy
- Contribute to maintaining a safe and supportive working environment

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- English and Mathematics Grade 4 and higher GCSE
- BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology (Respiratory) or equivalent qualification
Desirable criteria
- English and Mathematics Grade 4 GCSE
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience working within an NHS respiratory physiology department
- Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills
- Eligible for voluntary registration with RCCP/HCPC (or working towards)
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of respiratory physiology, diagnostic techniques, and patient care principles
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a small, supportive team
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
