Salary Band: Negotiable according to current consultant salary scale plus London weighting.

Hours: Part‐time post (6 PAs) with a 1 in 9 second on call commitment (2% on call allowance).

Location: Royal Trinity Hospice, Clapham Common, London.

Tenure: 12‐month fixed term (2 months' notice period).

The Opportunity: 12‐month maternity cover at Royal Trinity Hospice, providing both inpatient and community care to a diverse population across central and southwest London. Post will be primarily inpatient‐focused but will support a bustling community team, including a recently launched rapid response service. Will work within a dynamic and supportive team of 4 other consultants to deliver high‐quality clinical care at England's oldest hospice. Suitable for a newly qualified consultant looking for a supportive first role, a seasoned consultant seeking new experience, or a trainee approaching the end of specialty training.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Excellence: Lead ward rounds and provide senior medical oversight for the Inpatient Unit (IPU), managing complex symptoms and end‐of‐life care. Royal Trinity Hospice has 26 beds across two wards; typically, one consultant covers each ward.
  • MDT Leadership: Work collaboratively with nurses, AHPs, social work, spiritual care and psychiatric services to develop individualised, person‐centred care plans. Chair the weekly IPU IDT meeting and support complex psychosocial meetings.
  • Community Support & Advice: Provide specialist advice to community nursing and medical teams, local GPs, and hospital partners. Support complex case management and palliative care in hard‐to‐access groups. Provide senior clinical input to hospice community IDTs and heart‐failure IDTs.
  • On‐Call: Participate in the consultant on‐call rota (typically 1 in 9) providing face‐to‐face and remote support for the hospice IPU, and telephone advice only for St George's, Chelsea & Westminster, Croydon, and The Royal Hospital of Neuro‐disability.
  • Education & Governance: Mentorship of junior medical staff and clinical/educational supervision of trainees. Participation in clinical audit and quality improvement initiatives encouraged.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practise.
  • On the GMC Specialist Register for Palliative Medicine (or within 3 months of CCT at interview – please contact us to discuss acting up opportunities).
  • Significant experience in specialist palliative care across inpatient and/or community settings.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to navigate sensitive and complex ethical discussions.
  • Experience of training in research methodology, clinical audit and medical education.
