Locum Consultant in Acute Medicine

NHS Medical & Dental: Locum Consultant

Job overview

The Royal Surrey is one of the few hospitals in the country to be rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and we are excited to invite applications to join our new Acute Medical Department! Our brand new same day emergency care (SDEC) unit opened alongside a revamped Acute Medical Unit and we are now looking to expand our consultant workforce to develop the service further!

We are looking for a Locum Consultant for a 6/12 month fixed term contract.

Successful candidates will join a growing team looking to transform our existing offering into a national, best-in-class model for collaborative care. We are adopting a one-floor approach with the emergency department, SDEC and community services to ensure that we deliver timely care. The focus is to avoid unnecessary admission, reduce duplication and ensure that the sickest patients are prioritised.

Main duties of the job

The acute physician(s) will be responsible for providing consultant cover for the medical patients on AMU, SDEC and the emergency department. The key duties and responsibilities of the post will be:

  1. Clinical and administrative responsibility for patients in AMU & SDEC.
  2. Early and appropriate clinical decision making for emergency admissions.
  3. Supervision of medical admissions through the acute medical unit and Guildford ward.
  4. Promoting flow through from the Emergency Department.
  5. Recruitment, supervision and training of junior medical staff and allied health professionals working in the units.
  6. Ensuring that resuscitation and end of life care issues are appropriately and sensitively managed.
  7. Development of ambulatory pathways.
  8. Delivery of clinical audits and quality improvement relevant to the needs of the department.
  9. Recruitment and active involvement with clinical trials in both units.

Working for our organisation

Recognising that our 5000 colleagues are our greatest strength, we offer a comprehensive health and wellbeing program along with a commitment to developing and advancing your career. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) have given us an overall rating of Outstanding.

Royal Surrey has a strong reputation and history to build on. We are proud of our achievements and we are investing in our colleagues through our commitment to supporting professional development as well as investing more than £45 million in our physical environment and new equipment in the next few years. There has never been a better time to join us.

Although it isn\’t the Trusts normal practice, adverts may close early, so you are encouraged to submit an application as soon as possible.
