Overview

As a Survival Equipment Technician (SET), you will maintain vital lifesaving equipment to enable aircrew to operate safely. This equipment helps them survive on land, sea or in the air in peacetime or on military operations. You may assist in training aircrew on survival techniques on land and sea.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the aircraft\’s survival packs, radio beacons, distress flares, life jackets and life rafts.
  • Ensure crew and passengers are fully equipped and know what to do in an emergency on board a Royal Navy aircraft.
  • Safe selection and use of hand and mechanical tools and equipment during maintenance of survival equipment.
  • Use of ground support equipment, including gaseous cylinders and charging equipment.
  • Perform functional checks and fault diagnosis on survival equipment.
  • Identify and resolve problems using the appropriate processes; understand the limits of authority/approval.
  • Read, interpret and understand engineering data, drawings, specifications, maintenance manuals and aircraft documentation.
  • Carry out maintenance of survival equipment pyrotechnics, quick release fittings, inertia reels and restraining harnesses, life rafts, covert emergency locator beacons, night vision goggles and parachutes.
  • Undertake deployed operations training; contribute to survival drills and training of aircrew.
  • Carry out maintenance of aircrew equipment assemblies and repairs; maintenance of life preservers.

Training and progression

Training to become a qualified Survival Equipment Technician – Survival Equipment Fitter. Training occurs in two environments: onshore facilities and onboard ships. Initial training includes 10 weeks of basic naval training, followed by seven months at the Defence College of Aeronautical Engineering in Gosport. You will learn survival drills and how to maintain, repair and pack parachutes, life rafts and survival packs, with regular tests. A basic survival course and assistance with survival training are provided; you will need good fitness and be a competent swimmer. You will then spend time at a Royal Naval Air Station to develop real-world knowledge before signing off servicing work as complete.

  • Level 2 Aerospace and Aviation
  • Level 3 Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering Survival Equipment Maintenance
  • Level 3 Aerospace and Aviation qualification (working title)
  • GCSE or equivalent in Math and English (grade C/4 or higher)
