Linking Navy to Nation with inspiring stories and experiences. Here you can come aboard the most famous ships, planes, and submarines of the Royal Navy and experience them through the stories of the people who served on them. As well as being truly captivated by the thousands of unique, emotional, and sometimes quirky stories that have shaped the Royal Navy into what it proudly stands for today.
You are pivotal in us achieving our vision, and to support this we embrace diversity and want everyone to feel valued and have a sense of belonging.
This is a great opportunity to join the Volunteer team:
Would you like the opportunity to help uncover hidden stories from history whilst developing your own research skills?
The Royal Navy Museums (Portsmouth) is looking to form a dedicated team of volunteers to help search for the first Black Royal Marine Commando, as well as other personnel from mixed ethnic backgrounds.
Your research will contribute to displays in a new world-class museum for the Royal Marines, which is set to open in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard in 2026. You will also help the museum to reflect the true diversity of this branch by shinning a light on the service and heroism of global majority recruits from the Second World War onwards.
What you can bring:
We know that valuable skills, knowledge and experience can come from many different experiences, not just paid work. Whether through volunteering, community involvement, education, hobbies or other activities, we'd love to hear about the experience you can bring. You are also welcome to tell us about any volunteering-related training or volunteer networks and organisations you are involved with.
Volunteers do not necessarily need to be based in Portsmouth, as there will be opportunities to participate by visiting other regional archives or even undertake research from the comfort of your own home!
Ideally you should have an interest in naval history and/or genealogy. Some experience of undertaking historical research would be an advantage, although full training will be offered on all aspects of the task.
What we offer:
- The opportunity to be part of a friendly and diverse workplace within a unique heritage environment.
- Free admission to other national museums and attractions within the reciprocal agreement.
- Discounts at our shops and cafes.
- Free and discounted tickets for family and friends.
If your application is successful, you will be invited in for an informal interview where we will be able to learn more about your skills and interests, and for you to ask questions and find out more information about the role. An induction and training will be provided for those who join the team.
If you are interested in volunteering on this project, please submit your express of interest by midnight on 3rd August. If you have any questions or require further information, please email: Kate Braun (Curator) at kate.braun@royalnavymuseums.org.uk
If you require reasonable adjustments to be made to the application process because of a disability, please contact the People team on recruitment@royalnavymuseums.org.uk for support.
