The Role
The General Manager is responsible for ensuring the National Maritime Museum delivers a high‑quality, inspirational experience for all visitors. They will lead and manage the Visitor and Sales team, and oversee the operational functions of retail, admissions and visitor experience, ensuring high levels of visitor engagement and enjoyment and delivering income through commercial activities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Act as a central point of contact for all internal teams to ensure smooth operation of the museum, focusing on continual improvement and understanding how activities impact the visitor experience.
- Contribute to long‑term planning and development through participation in strategic and creative meetings.
- Maintain and initiate relationships with external stakeholders, understand the visitor profile and drive standards through effective communication and management of expectations.
- Recruit, train, and develop staff, managing performance and leading a large site and multi‑functional team in a service environment.
- Deliver sales targets, manage commercial activities, and apply strong organisational and project management skills.
- Demonstrate proactive and flexible problem‑solving skills and ability to meet demanding deadlines.
Qualifications & Experience
- Experience managing a large site and multi‑functional team in a service environment.
- Proven track record of recruiting, training, developing staff, and managing performance.
- Strong communication and influencing skills at all levels.
- Commercially oriented, results‑driven with a strong track record of achieving sales targets.
- Excellent organisational and project management skills.
- Proactive and flexible problem‑solving skills with the ability to meet demanding deadlines.
Employment Details
Permanent full‑time, Senior Management Band 3. Core hours are 36 per week, Monday‑Friday 09:00‑17:00. Due to the nature of the role, some flexibility may be required including weekend and bank holiday work, for which time will be offered in lieu.
Salary: £48,205 per annum.
