Nuclear Medicine Technologist in Sutton

The Royal Marsden Hospital is Europe's largest Oncology centre with sites in Chelsea and Sutton. The Nuclear Medicine Department (Nuc Med, PET/CT, Therapies) is looking for an enthusiastic and well‑motivated individual to join our team on the Sutton site. The successful candidate will help to support the department as a whole and ensure that the service is patient‑focused and provides high quality care. The ideal candidate must demonstrate a commitment to professional development, an enthusiasm for their work and show a keen interest in the future of both their profession and the Diagnostic Imaging Service. Nuclear Medicine qualification and experience is essential. Full training in PET/CT will be provided where required. The candidate will be expected to support both the service and its staff in continuing to maintain and develop the highest standards of imaging. The position will predominantly be at our Sutton site.

Main duties of the job:

• The post holder will be responsible for the timely, efficient and courteous provision of Nuclear Medicine and PET services.
• The post-holder will liaise with a variety of staff throughout the Trust, including wards and theatres and with those from other NHS trusts.
• The key working relationships in the department will be with the imaging, medical, clerical and nursing staff.
• The post holder will have considerable patient contact, including contact with the terminally ill. Patient presentation will include the unconscious, incapacitated, confused and those with physical and mental disabilities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:

• To ensure correct identification of patients.
• To ensure the timely, efficient and courteous provision of imaging services within the available resources. This will involve booking of patient appointments, explanation of procedures, cannulation and injecting of patients, administration of oral, intravenous and inhaled radiopharmaceuticals, as well as operation of the gamma cameras and PET/CT scanner.
• To provide both qualitative and quantitative results to agreed standards.
• To ensure that all data analysis, hard copy production and archiving is performed in a timely, consistent and accurate manner.
• To comply with written systems of work.
• To ensure statutory and Trust standards for record keeping are adhered to.
• To ensure the safety and wellbeing of patients and visitors within the department.
• To adhere to the “local rules” relating to radiation protection.
• To ensure that statutory Departmental and Trust requirements for record keeping are met.
• To ensure that quality assurance of equipment and general care and cleaning is carried out in line with departmental policy, recording and reporting faults in a timely manner and where appropriate implementing corrective action.
• To report any deficiencies in the quality of service provision to the Radioisotope Services Manager or his/her Deputy.
• To participate in the extended hour rota and be willing to adopt a flexible approach to working hours if required.
• To notify the Radioisotope Services Manager and/or Deputy Service Lead of any untoward incidents as appropriate and according to departmental procedures and protocols.
• To ensure security in the work environment and maintain the integrity of all Controlled Areas.
• To ensure that materials required for safe manual handling of immobile patients are always available, maintained in good working order and that the need for repairs / replacements are highlighted.

Person specification:

Education/Qualifications:

• Degree (or post graduate qualification) in Nuclear Medicine or Radiography.
• Evidence of clinical experience.
• Evidence of professional development.
• Appropriate state registration.
• Further Education.

Experience:

• Previous PET/CT experience.
• Post graduate experience in Nuclear medicine.

Skills Abilities/knowledge:

• Ability to express themselves clearly.
• Ability to write clearly and concisely.
• Ability to use a range of computer software.
• Evidence of problem solving.

Other Requirements:

• Flexibility to meet the needs of the service (e.g. shift work).
• Able to work on both sites and to be flexible to meet the needs of the role.

Flu Vaccination – What We Expect of our Staff:

At The Royal Marsden we have an immune–compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease. The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the utmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient‑facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
