An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Breast Research Nurse to join the Breast Research unit at The Royal Marsden in Sutton. The Royal Marsden is a world leader in cancer research, treatment and education, in partnership with The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). This role will support the conduct of clinical trials at the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe and the only National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) specialising in cancer in the UK.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will work under the supervision of the Senior Breast Research Nurses and play a key role in the day‑to‑day running of clinical trials.
  • Responsibilities include:
    • Coordinating arrangements for patients undergoing specialist investigations as part of the research protocol.
    • Assessing patients prior to trial treatment, monitoring the patient during trial treatment, and following up after trial completion as required by protocol.
    • Collecting and accurately recording data in accordance with trial protocol requirements.
    • Safeguarding the integrity of the trial by ensuring compliance with ICH GCP guidelines.
    • Managing several concurrent research studies.
    • Disseminating research data by preparing and presenting posters or research papers at meetings, conferences and publications.
    • Supporting patients who choose to participate in clinical trials by providing advice and information, and acting as the patients’ advocate.
    • Maintaining accurate and comprehensive records and ensuring that any research safeguards patient well‑being in line with ICH Good Clinical Practice Guidelines.
    • Contributing to the development of trial design and incorporating patient and nurse perspectives, and liaising with pharmaceutical companies and academic institutions during trial development.

Person specification

  • Education / Qualifications
    • Post‑registration oncology qualification or equivalent relevant qualification.
    • Basic computer literacy.
    • Research methods education.
    • Evidence of continuing professional development.
    • Competence in research‑oriented PC software (Access, Excel, SPSS).
  • Experience
    • Experience as a senior staff nurse or above in a clinical research environment.
    • Experience as a senior staff nurse in oncology nursing.
    • Previous experience in related specialties such as haematology, gynaecology.
    • Personal and leadership management experience.
    • Experience of coordinating HRA submissions.
  • Skills, Abilities & Knowledge
    • Proven experience of team leadership and team‑building initiatives.
    • Advanced organisational skills and ability to manage multiple projects at various stages.
    • Excellent cross‑disciplinary/inter‑agency communication skills and ability to facilitate collaborative working relationships.
    • Ability to appraise junior staff through performance review.
    • Confident and articulate communication.
    • Ability to make decisions, organise and prioritise.
    • Ability to innovate and respond to change.
    • Ability to work unsupervised.
    • Ability to initiate and drive original research.
  • Other Requirements
    • Flexibility to meet the needs of the service (e.g., shift work, cross‑site cover).
    • Ability to work at both sites and be flexible to meet the needs of the role.
