An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Superintendent Radiographer (Diagnostic) to join the Imaging leadership team at The Royal Marsden.

This senior role combines leadership of x-ray services across Chelsea, Sutton and Cavendish Square with Trust-wide responsibility for radiology education, workforce development and clinical supervision.

As Lead Diagnostic Radiographer, you will provide clinical and professional leadership for x-ray, fluoroscopy, mobile/theatre and dental imaging services, ensuring high standards of patient care, safety and quality. You will lead service improvement and standardisation, working closely with radiologists, radiographers, physicists, educators and multidisciplinary teams. The role also includes acting as Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) and leading for QSI, CQC and HSE inspections.

As Radiology Education Lead, you will oversee education and workforce development, including training, supervision, CPD, advanced practice and career pathways. You will also work with universities, apprenticeship providers and regional imaging networks to support future workforce needs.

We are seeking an HCPC-registered radiographer with substantial senior diagnostic radiography experience, Master's-level study (or equivalent expertise) and evidence of ongoing CPD. You will be a strong leader committed to quality improvement, innovation and excellent patient care, with flexibility to work across all Royal Marsden sites.

Main duties of the job

Provide clinical leadership for all x-ray, fluoroscopy, dental, mobile/theatre imaging services, and any future x-ray modalities across all Trust sites. Act as the lead radiographer for service development, clinical excellence and educational visits, and liaise with referrers to ensure the most appropriate imaging examination is selected for each patient.

Ensure the timely, efficient and patient-centred delivery of x-ray services across multiple sites and imaging systems, making best use of available resources. Support staffing arrangements, including on-call provision, and assist the Radiology Services Manager with the operational management of the Imaging Department.

Act as a key point of contact for patients, carers, relatives and colleagues, providing a professional, welcoming and supportive service. Receive and guide patients attending for investigations and ensure relevant previous imaging is available to support accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

Support the Radiology Services Manager and imaging leadership team with workforce planning, recruitment and retention initiatives. Review staffing requirements before vacancies are advertised and contribute to the selection of new team members. Line manage Practice Educators and x-ray staff, support Clinical Supervisors within training programmes, and oversee the supervision, training and development of staff in line with departmental and organisational objectives.

1.5. Education, governance and compliance

  • Maintain compliance with the QSI and requirements.
  • Monitor compliance - relating to the training matrix.
  • Co-ordinate, monitor and ensure compliance with mandatory training.

1.6. Workforce planning/development

  • Contribute to workforce planning.
  • Design CPD programmes and career pathways.

1.7. Research

  • To participate regularly in clinical research and service evaluation within x-ray services, assessing research compliance and capacity for new trials and identifying opportunities for research, innovation and evidence generation that can influence clinical and educational practice.
  • To co-ordinate with clinical units (and physics team) regarding research protocols to provide agreed protocols for Imaging.
  • To ensure the correct pathway and documentation for trialling new x-ray equipment
  • To ensure that research protocols are adhered to and that all the relevant documentation is available on request.

1.8. Training and Education

  • Provide strategic, Trust wide leadership for radiography education, workforce development and clinical supervision processes, acting as the principal specialist resource for education and professional development within the imaging service.
  • Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of an imaging education and training strategy with the imaging leads team, aligning education, workforce and service development priorities with evidence, professional standards and the future needs of the service.
  • Lead implementation of the College of Radiographers Education and Career Framework, and ACCEND.

Person specification

Education, qualifications and professional registration

  • HCPC registration as a radiographer.
  • DCR/BSc in Radiography or equivalent.
  • Significant recent postgraduate experience in x-ray/general radiography.
  • Relevant postgraduate qualification at Master’s level, or equivalent advanced specialist expertise demonstrated through substantial specialist practice, professional development and application of theory at an equivalent level.
  • Evidence of sustained specialist CPD relevant to the post.
  • Training in facilitated learning.
  • Teaching qualification and/or accreditation as a Society of Radiographers Practice Educator.

Experiencec

  • Substantial senior experience in diagnostic radiography within a specialist area.
  • Demonstrable experience of leading service development, change and improvement across a service or multiple sites.
  • Experience of teaching, supervision, training and assessment across a range of learners and staff groups.
  • Experience of using different teaching and learning methods and adapting approaches to complex and diverse needs.
  • Experience of delivering formal presentations, specialist teaching and professional education.
  • Experience of applying evidence, audit, research or service evaluation to improve clinical practice, education or service delivery.
  • Experience of managing diagnostic radiography staff.
