We are currently looking for enthusiastic, motivated and experienced Band 6 Staff Nurses to join the Private Patient Medical Day Unit (PPMDU) at the Royal Marsden in Chelsea. You will need to be a first‑level registered nurse with demonstrable previous oncology experience and experience in the administration of IV medications and chemotherapy; intravenous cannulation and venepuncture are desirable, although full training will be provided. Excellent communication skills, reliability, enthusiasm and effective teamwork are essential.

Main duties of the job
  • To coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality, evidence‑led care to patients.
  • To exercise clinical judgment and decision making about patient needs in terms of long‑term goals or plans.
  • To plan, document, deliver and evaluate evidence‑based nursing care for patients in a responsible and efficient way.
  • To assume personal accountability for nursing care delivered to a patient in accordance with the NMC code of conduct.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To complete the first‑level assessment of the patient’s needs to gain an understanding of the physiological, psycho‑social, spiritual and cultural needs of patients undergoing diagnostic tests for suspected cancer as well as those diagnosed with cancer and to develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure that the needs of the patient and family are met. This will include:

  • Checking patients’ vital signs, blood results, height and weight.
  • Counter‑checking patients’ vital signs, blood results, body surface area, chemotherapy prescription and consent before administration of treatment.
  • Educating patients on their treatment protocol such as indications and side effects.
  • Ensuring necessary medication and follow‑up appointments are obtained.
  • Promoting a patient‑focused multidisciplinary approach to care in collaboration with carers, other health care professionals and external agencies.
Person specificationEducation/Qualifications
  • NMC Registration
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • SACT Competent
  • RMH Certificate in Intravenous Drug Administration or to be obtained within three months of appointment
  • Qualification in oncology or speciality
  • Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent)
  • Recognised teaching qualification
  • Leadership Training
Experience
  • Experience in managing the deteriorating patient
  • Experience in chemotherapy administration
  • Experience in intravenous drug administration
  • CVAD access, cannulation and venepuncture
  • Sufficient post‑registration nursing experience in oncology or speciality to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job
  • Experience in Clinical Management
  • Evidence of relevant teaching experience

  • Flexibility to meet the needs of the service (e.g. shift work)
  • Able to work on all Trust sites as required and to be flexible to meet the needs of the role
