The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust has an international reputation for high quality patient care, education and research and its partnership with the Institute of Cancer Research has created the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe. The Chelsea Radiotherapy department has 4 Varian linear accelerators, a Cyberknife and a Brachytherapy Suite. Our Pre-treatment clinical environment includes a Mould room, Siemens Confidence CT scanner and Virtual Simulation using Eclipse, much of which is led by the advanced pre-treatment radiographers. Current developments include the use of AI in Breast localisation. The department is fully digital utilising EPIC and Aria to manage patient pathways.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, caring and highly motivated therapy radiographer to work as a Band 7 team leader within the Pre-Treatment team. We are looking for a practitioner with an excellent technical background and pre-treatment experience at senior level. This role requires someone confident and experienced in advanced pre-treatment imaging and virtual simulation techniques including 4DCT, RGSC guided breath-hold techniques, SABR, SRS/T and VMAT. Knowledge and experience of cannulation and contrast administration is desirable. The successful candidate will be expected to achieve competency in all pre-treatment skills to ensure an efficient, high-quality service is provided to all patients throughout their pathway.

Senior Practitioner Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the radiotherapy processes and operational management of a specialist highly complex radiotherapy work base.
  • Supervise the immediate radiographic team, ensuring accurate and effective practice.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for evidence based decision making within prescribed limits.
  • Competent to analyse and approve images following designated training and adhering to protocols.
  • Responsible for the accurate preparation, planning and delivery of treatment by self and by all members of the immediate team.
  • Set high standards of technical expertise, acting as a role model to junior staff members.
  • Maintain professional standards of self and other team members.
  • Train team members in the operation of all equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Meet regulatory responsibilities defined for an operator as delegated by the Trust under the IR(ME)R regulations.

Person specification:

Education/Qualifications:
  • HCPC registration as a therapeutic radiographer (requires BSc (Hons) in Radiotherapy or equivalent accredited programme).
  • Postgraduate attainment in therapeutic radiography related subject/leadership/management.
  • Postgraduate qualification/training in assessing/supervising/teaching.
Experience:
  • Significant experience of sophisticated RT environment as a Senior II treating advanced techniques, particularly IGRT.
  • Participated in a quality management programme.
  • Previous experience of participating in clinical education of pre-registration students.
  • Participated in research/audit/service evaluation.
  • Experience in paper light/paper free radiotherapy processes.
  • Experience of using Aria/Mosaiq.
Skills/Ability/Knowledge:
  • Demonstrate understanding of the advanced principles for sophisticated radiotherapy treatment planning and delivery.
  • Computer literate with associated keyboard skills.
  • Demonstrable problem solving and decision-making ability.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with ability to prioritise tasks.
  • Act effectively as lead radiographer at a clinical work base with ability to motivate team members.
  • Have assured demeanour with appropriate confidence in own abilities.
  • Commitment to personal and professional development, as well as to the training and development of others.

Circumstances:

  • Able to work non-standard hours between 08:00 and 20:00 to meet the exigencies of the service.
  • Expected to participate in the non-residential radiotherapy weekend on call service and the weekend day or bank holiday service.
  • Able to work on both sites and to be flexible to meet the needs of the role.
