Specialist Pharmacist, Children and Young People's Cancer Services in London

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, highly motivated pharmacist to enhance their paediatric or oncology experience and join the Children and Young People’s (CYP) pharmacy team at the Sutton site of the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will work collaboratively as part of a friendly and supportive multidisciplinary team to enhance the patient experience and support the Lead Pharmacist in delivering outstanding pharmacy services to the CYP Unit.

The Royal Marsden’s Oak Centre for CYP is one of the largest comprehensive children and young people’s cancer centres in Europe, treating a range of paediatric and young adult cancers (leukaemia, lymphomas, solid and brain tumours) in patients from 1 to 24 years of age. The Trust is one of the largest UK bone marrow transplant units and is accredited by JACIE and the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation. The role involves managing patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation.

• Lead, develop and evaluate clinical pharmacy services to the Paediatric Unit in accordance with Clinical Services guidelines.
• Provide a framework for the safe, efficient and cost‑effective use of medicine resources within the Paediatric Unit, including effective ward‑based services, education and training, procedures, policies and guidelines, and medicines usage information.
• Develop and maintain highly specialist knowledge in medicines used within Paediatric oncology, acting as a role model for pharmacy in the field and ensuring a consistently high pharmaceutical service in line with national standards, Trust strategy and the NHS Plan.
• Work across the in‑patient wards (McElwain ward and Teenage Cancer Trust Unit) and the Children’s Day Unit, delivering treatment 7 days a week to up to 27 patients and ensuring safe delivery of care in partnership with St George’s Hospital.

• Strategically coordinate and evaluate a comprehensive clinical pharmacy service to the Paediatric Unit, ensuring safe, clinically effective and cost‑efficient use of medicines in children and adolescents.
• Provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care, contributing to the multi‑professional team through ward pharmacy services and attendance on clinician’s ward rounds, clinics and meetings.
• Communicate effectively with all healthcare professionals to ensure safe, clinically effective and cost‑efficient drug use.
• Identify systematic or preventable errors associated with medicines used within the Paediatric Unit and facilitate learning.
• Proactively develop clinical pharmacy services in line with local and national objectives, including National Service Specification and NICE Improving Outcomes Guidance.
• Facilitate effective communication about relevant pharmacy issues to clinicians and senior managers, identifying opportunities for the development of pharmacy services to match identified service and care needs.

• GPhC registration as a Pharmacist.

• Oncology Pharmacy experience and/or Paediatric experience.
• DUR and clinical audit experience.
• Delivering training to multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience of budget management and directorate support.
• Experience of working with clinical trials.

• Work effectively as part of a team.
• Work independently when required.
• Good time‑management and organisational skills, ability to prioritise effectively.
• Work under pressure whilst maintaining attention to detail and accuracy.
• Communicate effectively with members of the public and other healthcare professionals.
• Train other members of staff.
• Use Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Initiate and implement change.

• Good understanding of own limitations and identification of own learning needs.
