We are currently looking for enthusiastic, motivated and experienced Band 6 Senior Staff Nurses to join the Private Patient Medical Day Unit (PPMDU) at the Royal Marsden in Chelsea. We are proud of the great care we deliver at the PPMDU and the integrated model of care that exists with our NHS colleagues, facilitating innovative research, diagnosis, treatment and care for all patients.
You will need to be a 1st level registered nurse, with demonstrable previous Oncology experience and experience in the administration of IV medications and chemotherapy being essential. Intravenous cannulation and venepuncture are desirable; however, full training will be given. In addition, you will possess excellent communication skills, be reliable, enthusiastic, and an effective team member committed to providing the highest level of service for our patients.

Main duties of the job:
- To coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality, evidence-led care to patients.
- To exercise clinical judgment and decision making about patient needs in terms of long-term goals or plans.
- To participate fully in the day-to-day organization and running of clinical trials including the recruitment, education and monitoring of patients entering a clinical trial and liaison as required with trial sponsors.
- To assume personal accountability for nursing care delivered to a patient in accordance with the NMC code of conduct.

- To participate in Trust initiatives around infection control and care quality indicators.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:
- To complete the first level assessment of the patient’s needs to gain an understanding of the physiological, psycho-social, spiritual and cultural needs of patients undergoing diagnostic tests for suspected cancer as well as those diagnosed with cancer and to develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure that the needs of the patient and family are met.
- Checking patients’ vital signs, blood results, height and weight.
- Counterchecking patients’ vital signs, blood results, body surface area, chemotherapy prescription and consent before administration of treatment.
- Educating patients on their treatment protocol such as indications and side effects.
- Ensuring necessary medication and follow-up appointments are obtained.
- To plan, document, deliver and evaluate evidence-based nursing care for patients in a responsible and efficient way.
- To work and support staff in performing venepuncture, cannulation, accessing PICC’s and Portacaths and administration of Intravenous and SACT therapies.
- To support the Ward Manager in the management of the clinical environment as a clinical leader and role model.
- To take responsibility for the management and development of a team of staff under the supervision of the Ward Manager.
- Liaise effectively with members of the multi-disciplinary health care team to achieve a coordinated specialist service across all Trust sites.
- To plan, document, deliver and evaluate care plans from admission through to discharge/transfer discussing this with the patient, their family and multi-disciplinary teams and to alert the Sister/Charge Nurse of any changes.

Education/Qualifications:
- Qualification in oncology or speciality.
- Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent).
- Recognised teaching qualification.
- Leadership Training.
- NMC Registration.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development.
- SACT Competent.
- RMH Certificate in Intravenous Drug Administration or to be obtained within three months of appointment.
Experience:
- Experience in managing the deteriorating patient.
- Experience in chemotherapy administration.
- Experience in intravenous drug administration.
- CVAD access, cannulation and venepuncture.
- Sufficient post-registration nursing experience in oncology or speciality to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job.
- Experience in Clinical Management.
- Evidence of relevant teaching experience.
- Knowledge and understanding of clinical trials management.
