Applications are invited for a Band 8A Principal Radioisotope and Imaging Physicist in the Radioisotope Physics group of the Royal Marsden NHSFT at Sutton. The successful candidate will provide expert support to the Nuclear Medicine areas of imaging, molecular radiotherapy and radiation safety across the Sutton and Chelsea sites.
Main Duties
- The post holder will act as a Medical Physics Expert across all nuclear medicine imaging and therapy. They will contribute to day‑to‑day physics support services.
- The post holder will lead the scientific development of PET‑CT imaging services across both sites and ensure all department activities proceed within a quality framework.
Detailed Responsibilities
- Act as an operator under the Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017 for nuclear medicine, radionuclide therapy and isolated limb perfusion procedures.
- Provide Medical Physics Expert advice to the Trust on complex scientific and technical issues that impact patient care.
- Support highly complex SPECT‑CT and PET‑CT cameras and associated computing and data storage equipment.
- Ensure quality assurance and quality control programmes for all SPECT‑CT and PET‑CT cameras and related equipment meet required guidelines and standards.
Person Specification
Education/Qualifications
- Good (1st or 2nd class) Honours degree in a relevant subject or equivalent.
- Post‑graduate qualification in nuclear medicine physics culminating in UK state registration as a clinical scientist (e.g. AHCS Certificate of attainment or equivalent, completion of NHS STP programme).
- MPE Certificate of Competence (from RPA2000) or a pathway where certification is expected in less than 12 months.
- PhD in a relevant subject or equivalent scientific knowledge with published material.
Experience
- Highly developed specialist knowledge in imaging procedures in Nuclear Medicine, especially PET‑CT with theoretical knowledge and hands‑on experience.
- Specialist training and practical experience with a wide range of nuclear medicine computer applications.
Clinical
- Specialised knowledge of clinical issues and their implications for nuclear medicine diagnosis and therapy.
- High level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure.
Managerial
- Knowledge of employment procedures and practices suitable for supervising individuals or small groups of staff.
IT
- Proficient in Excel, Word, Access and similar tools for documentation and data extraction.
- Programming and system modification skills in nuclear medicine computer systems.
