This is a one year fixed term locum post. This post has been devised to support the surgical team who currently provide specialist services to patients in southwest London and supra specialist services to patients from the south and south east of England. The post is part of the work up in planning the future of the upper tract service. The successful applicant will have an interest in kidney and testis cancer surgically, specifically complex retroperitoneal open and robotic surgery. All the urologists provide support to the specialities in the hospital on urological aspects of care, including urinary diversion, stent management and general urology. All surgeons also support the general urology needs of the department including diagnostics.

Main duties of the job

This role is intended to support the ongoing reconfiguration and development of the service. The appointee will be supported and mentored by colleagues. The successful candidate will be a highly skilled and adaptable surgeon who is committed to collaborative, multidisciplinary working. In addition to delivering high-quality care within their own specialty, the post holder will be expected to provide cross-specialty support by assisting with and contributing to other specialties’ theatre lists as service demands require. This role requires flexibility and a strong team ethic, with a willingness to participate in weekend working and extended hours in line with clinical need, ensuring the safe, efficient, and timely delivery of surgical services while maintaining the highest standards of patient care and professional practice. The appointee will be provided with appropriate administrative and secretarial support, office accommodation, and IT facilities to support the effective delivery of their clinical, teaching, research and managerial responsibilities.

  • Full GMC registration and licence to practice
  • Eligible for Specialist Registration with the General Medical Council
  • Possession of CST or DATE within six months
  • If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview
  • If an applicant is non‑UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
  • Higher Degree (MD, PhD or equivalent)

Experience

  • Motivated to ensure the achievement of defined targets and demonstrate extensive clinical experience in the surgery of urological cancer, specifically kidney and testis cancer with fellowship training.
  • Experience in pelvic exenteration in Urology and to support Colorectal, Gynaecology and Sarcoma in the urological aspects of those cases.
  • Experience of service improvement.
  • Extensive experience in open and robotic retroperitoneal surgery including mentoring of colleagues and trainees.
  • Organisation of education and training of junior doctors and/or undergraduates, specialty trainees and other health care professionals.
  • Experience in initiating and supervising research by others.
