Diagnostic Radiographer - Mammography / X-ray & IR in London

The Royal Marsden Hospital is one of Europe's largest oncology centres, with sites in Chelsea, Cavendish Square and Sutton. This post is based at our Chelsea site and invites applications for a Band 6 radiographer to rotate in Mammography, General X‐ray, and Interventional Radiography. Participation in the residential on‐call service is not expected.

Main duties of the job

• The post holder will have a minimum of 2 years post‐registration experience, a BSc in Radiography (or equivalent), be HCPC state‐registered, and hold the Post‐Graduate Certificate of Competence in Mammography.
• The post holder will work as a member of the multi‐disciplinary team in the provision of an efficient and effective Diagnostic Imaging Service, liaising with clinicians, ward and other departmental staff.
• The post holder will rotate between Mammography, X‐ray, and Interventional Radiology as appropriate and may be required to work at our Chelsea, Sutton and Cavendish Square locations.
• The department operates 8 am–8 pm Monday‐Friday and 8 am–5 pm Saturday.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• Provide a high‐quality diagnostic imaging service.
• Perform and maintain high Mammography imaging standards and image review.
• Comply with accurate patient identification procedures.
• Perform imaging examinations within Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) and Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R) guidelines, adhering to local radiation protection guidelines.
• Give advice to patients and clinicians regarding preparation required for specialised examinations and obtain verbal/written consent for imaging and intravenous contrast administration.
• Advise on after‐care following interventional procedures and manage bruising/extravasation post‐contrast injection.
• Communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and escorts before, during and after an examination, including patients who are unconscious, uncooperative, incapacitated, incompetent, disorientated or have physical or mental disabilities.
• Accurately record and retrieve patient allergy status, particularly related to intravenous contrast.
• Operate image data archives, record, store, retrieve and transmit image data from digital mammography and cross‐sectional imaging.
• Use computer keyboards and VDUs across all imaging modalities.
• Ensure validity of imaging requests.
• Accurately position and manoeuvre patients, maintaining high precision during imaging.
• Use manual handling aids, hoists, slide sheets and pat sheets in accordance with the Trust's Manual Handling Policy.
• Work unsupervised within clinical/legal guidelines.
• Liaise with radiologist/clinician when imaging reveals urgent pathology.
• Ensure security of the work environment.
• Perform standard equipment Quality Assurance (QA), record results and alert modality lead/medical physics as required.

Person specification

• Education / Qualifications
• State registration.
• BSc (or equivalent) in Radiography.
• Post‐Graduate Certificate of Competence in Mammography.
• Certificates in cannulation or completed workbooks.
• Experience
• Minimum of two years post‐graduate experience.
• Experience working with patients in an oncology setting.
• Experience of cross‐sectional imaging.

• Proficient with word processing software and IT systems (e.g., Radiology systems, Microsoft Word, Outlook).
