Advanced Nurse Practitioner in London

The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Haematology Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) to join our Cancer Services Directorate. This is a full‑time role (37.5 hours per week) based primarily at our Sutton site, with travel required to all Trust sites including Chelsea. Please note this role is a band 7 / 8a depending on experience.

This post offers a unique opportunity to develop and deliver advanced nursing practice within haemato‑oncology across inpatient, outpatient, and day care settings for both NHS and private patients. Working as part of a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, you will provide expert clinical care, act as a role model and leader, and play a key role in shaping the future of haemato‑oncology services within the Trust.

Main duties of the job:

• This post is aimed at developing new ways of working for senior cancer nurses as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) in haemato‑oncology, providing a 7‑day service.
• The ANP will integrate into the existing haemato‑oncology team to carry out their extended roles which will include routine management of the haemato‑oncology patient, including practical procedures and the admission of haemato‑oncology patients.
• This post will cover both NHS and private patients in the inpatient, outpatient and day care settings.
• They will act as a highly specialised role model and leader for all members of staff and play a major role in the continuous development of the services within the Trust and as a potential member of a range of trust quality/process improvement project groups.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:

• Uses best evidence, advanced specialist skills, knowledge and expertise to provide expert clinical care.
• To integrate into the existing clinical structure and to support other professionals to manage the routine care of haemato‑oncology in patients by collaborating with other principle team members for both NHS and PP services.
• The ANP will undertake routine advanced physical assessment of haemato‑oncology patients including history taking, clinical examination, arranging relevant investigations (e.g. blood tests, radiographs) and prescribing.
• Presenting and attending Ward rounds – preparing Ward rounds / MDT/Outpatient lists in conjunction with the team.
• Reviews patients’ progress on a daily basis, recording any changes to their condition in the medical notes.
• Verbally communicating changes in care to relevant ward team.
• Provide expert clinical assessment, diagnosis, and management of haemato‑oncology patients.
• Undertake advanced clinical procedures including cannulation, blood sampling, bone marrow biopsies, line removals, and venesections.
• Prescribe medications in line with protocols, including Systemic Anti‑Cancer Therapy (SACT).
• Lead daily patient reviews, ward rounds, and MDT meetings, ensuring high standards of documentation and communication.
• Support safe and timely discharge planning, liaising closely with patients, carers, and the wider MDT.
• Act as a clinical leader, role model, and educator, supporting colleagues and contributing to teaching at local, national, and international level.
• Participate in service development, policy creation, clinical governance, audit, and research to continually improve patient outcomes and care delivery.
• Work autonomously within a competency framework and maintain advanced clinical skills in line with the four pillars of advanced practice.

Person specification:

• Education/Qualifications:
• First level Registered Nurse with the NMC.
• Degree level education.
• Possess a relevant Specialist Qualification in cancer or haematology.
• MSc in Advanced Practice (or working towards within first 12 months).
• Up to date Advanced Life Level 7 physical assessment module.
• Level 7 non‑medical prescribing module (or working towards within first 12 months).
• Mentorship/ assessor qualification or equivalent.
• Experience:
• Excellent clinical skills, that have been practiced at a senior staff nurse/charge nurse level, with proven managerial and leadership skills.
• Mentorship and teaching experience.
• Experience in the supervision of junior staff / others.
• Experience in Change Management.
• Skills Abilities/knowledge:
• Clinical assessment of patients on a daily basis.
• Work with SpR and SHO teams to deliver a streamlined service for patients and their families.
• Proven teaching and assessing skills.
• Ability to make clinical decisions and assess clinical priorities.
• Evidence of continuing professional development.
• Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing.
• Demonstrate the ability to compile complex written information.
• Able to manage difficult situations effectively.
• Capable of working independently and taking appropriate action.
• Demonstrate evidence of applying current research to practice.
• Experience of audit and research.
• PICC Insertion.
• Skin tunnelled line removal.
• Bone Marrow Aspiration and Trephine.

Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.

The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the utmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient‑facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
