Job overview

The Gynaecological Unit, led by Mr John Bulter, at the Royal Marsden has a strong reputation for its multidisciplinary approach to the management of gynaecological malignancy. Professor Susana Banerjee is Clinical Research Lead for the Gynaecology Unit. The gynaecology research team, led by Professor Banerjee, is world class developing, leading and delivering phase I-III clinical trials several of which have led to changes in clinical practice.

Acute Oncology Service (AOS) provision was identified in 2009 as a key recommendation of the National Chemotherapy Advisory Group (NCAG) for improving quality and safety of emergency care for those patients with previously undiagnosed cancer and complications of cancer or treatment. The AOS service at the Royal Marsden is an established part of the urgent care pathway with the aim of supporting self‑care, admission avoidance and ensuring cancer patients receive the right care in the right place with the necessary facilities and expertise.

Main duties of the job

  • Management of patients in the Centre for Urgent Care (CUC)
  • Telephone support to the Royal Marsden Hotline
  • Provide clinical leadership and support for the effective ongoing development of the service and to attend relevant operational meetings
  • A key role in junior doctor educational development and leadership
  • To provide advice on medical oncology/systemic therapy aspects of treatment and care for patients within the Gynaecology Unit at The Royal Marsden
  • To provide leadership and support for the multidisciplinary care team, particularly on the Fulham Road site.
  • To attend the unit specific MDMs, clinics and research meetings in line with the Job Plan

Qualifications and Status

  • MBBS or approved overseas equivalent
  • MRCP or approved overseas equivalent
  • Full registration and license to practice with the General Medical Council
  • On the Specialist Register for Medical Oncology or within six months of obtaining a certificate of completion of training (CCT) at date of interview.
  • Evidence of on‑going professional development
  • Higher Research Degree (MD/PHD)

Experience

  • Subspecialty experience in gynaecological cancers, including the delivery of care for patients enrolled on interventional studies
  • Experience in national or international collaborative research networks

Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.

The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient‑facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
