The Estates Department operates and maintains energy and environmental resources, controls, electrical and mechanical services providing power, lighting, heating, and air conditioning to wards, outpatients, and operating theatres. Estates directly impacts patient welfare, frontline clinical care, infection prevention and control, and energy efficiency and sustainability across the Trust.
We have an exciting opportunity for a committed, highly self-motivated individual. The Royal Marsden is looking for an Intern Undergraduate Engineer to join the Estates Team on a 1-year placement from July 2026. This is a highly valuable broad-ranging role allowing the Undergraduate to find their feet in a real working environment, which will expose them to the whole range of Estates services including mechanical, electrical, building & energy control systems, and project management.
The candidate must be highly proactive in developing their technical knowledge in all aspects of training and work undertaken, engage in active discussions about skills, techniques, methods, and approaches to tasks in order to develop as a skilled professional. This role requires working in a live hospital site which will provide excellent opportunities to gain valuable work experience; behaviour at all times must be conducted in a professional manner and consistent with Trust Values.
Main duties of the job:
- The post holder will assist the Energy Manager in providing a safe, efficient, and effective service to patients, staff, and visitors.
- The Undergraduate Engineer will assist the Energy Manager in monitoring the Royal Marsden Trust energy and environmental resources, minimising its impact on the environment.
- Will assist Estates Project Managers and Estates Managers/Officers with supporting the management of the Estate, delivery of Estates services, and management of projects.
- The post holder will gain valuable work experience in project management and estate & facilities management.
- Site inspections, surveys, and investigations.
- Supervising and overseeing contractors, consultants, and works, and liaising with Trust staff and user departments.
- Producing business cases, data collection and analysis, producing reports and presentations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:
For further information, please refer to the detailed Job Description and Person Specification. These responsibilities will be carried out under the guidance of the shift coordinator. To learn and understand the workings of building and engineering services and systems within NHS/Trust premises so as to be able to provide a safe and effective service. Provide and receive routine information orally, in writing, or electronically which will develop rapport and empathy with staff groups, patients, and visitors where this is necessary to support job completion. There is a need for good communication skills which will assist the department in gaining the cooperation of others and maintaining good relations.
By learning on the job, the post holder will assist in energy and environmental management and be a source of reference for the Trust's energy and utilities consumption. Advise the Estates Manager regarding energy and utilities usage, environmental issues, and make judgements across the full range of straightforward job-related duties. The post holder will organise their own day-to-day work tasks and activities and assist in planning processes by gathering information and discussing with more senior colleagues.
Person specification:
Education/Qualifications: Completed 1st year Degree (Mechanical / Electrical / Building Services Engineering degree).
Experience: Held position at school or member of a school team which demonstrates ability to work in a team, exercise a degree of leadership or initiative.
Skills Abilities/knowledge: Excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work well in a team. To want to help people. Ability to diffuse volatile situations and communicate with people.
Other Requirements: Be able to plan own work. Ability to carry out all aspects of the role. Working on own initiative.

Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease. The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the utmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
