IR / CT Senior Diagnostic Radiographer

The Royal Marsden Hospital is one of Europe’s largest oncology centres and was the world’s first hospital dedicated to cancer research, diagnosis, treatment and education, with sites in Chelsea and Sutton. The Diagnostic Imaging service provides an essential service to the Trust and includes CT with dual energy, MRI 1.5T and 3T, Mammography (including large field and interventional procedures), Ultrasound, general X‑ray, IR and fluoroscopy. The IR department conducts specific oncological interventional procedures such as Embolisation and ablations using a variety of ablative equipment. Our partnership with The Institute of Cancer Research and other key organisations means we offer access to the newest clinical trials and novel anti‑cancer agents; all imaging modalities are fundamental to this process and forefront techniques and protocols are constantly being evolved within Radiology.

Main duties of the job

• The post holder will work as a senior radiographer in IR and CT, liaising with radiologists and clinicians, and will be responsible for the timely, efficient and courteous provision of imaging services within the available resources.
• The role requires rotation between CT and IR, flexibility in approach, and participation in non‑residential on‑call provision.
• Rotate between CT and IR in line with department schedules.
• Provide efficient, courteous imaging services with timely response to clinical demand.
• Work as part of the multidisciplinary team, liaising with radiology interventional nurses, clinical nurse specialists, ward staff and other departmental staff.
• Liaise with internal and external agencies as required.
• Participate in non‑residential on‑call provision.
• Maintain good analytical, organisational, communication and computer skills.
• Ensure strict adherence to safety and quality standards.
• Support the superintendents in the operational management of the Imaging department.
• Ensure equipment maintenance, QA compliance and prompt reporting of faults.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• Deputise for the X‑ray/IR and CT superintendents when required.
• Ensure timely, efficient and courteous provision of IR, X‑ray and CT services on multiple pieces of equipment within the available resources.
• Support the superintendents in the operational management of the Imaging department.
• Work closely with the IR consultant radiologists to provide timely and reactive service.
• Work with Trust physicists to ensure all equipment is maintained to a high standard and meets QA and H&S requirements.
• Promote awareness and compliance with policy and/or guidelines for requests of IR, X‑ray and CT.
• Ensure the department implements an agreed programme for quality assurance and ultimately an external QA accreditation standard, as applicable.
• Be proficient in the use of all IR, X‑ray and CT equipment and all specialist techniques.
• Monitor and report equipment faults, determine the severity and probable impact on workload.
• Make a balanced judgment on when to call in a service engineer, taking into account the effect on the normal running of the service.

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

• State registration DCR/BSc in Radiography
• Cannulation certificate or completed workbook
• Post graduate experience in CT
• Post graduate experience in Interventional Radiology
• Significant experience in interventional oncology procedures

Experience

• Evidence of good organisation and communication
• Evidence of leadership and team building
• Experience in supervision of diagnostic staff in IR and CT

Skills Abilities/knowledge

At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease. The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient‑facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
