The Genetic Technologist Analyst is responsible for carrying out analytical molecular diagnostic investigations, validating and verifying new techniques and tests, and supporting a high‑quality, ISO 15189‑accredited Clinical Genomics Service.

Core duties include:

  • Performing PCR, RQ‑PCR, sequencing, NGS and ddPCR.
  • Managing quality processes and maintaining equipment.
  • Developing IT data management solutions.
  • Training new staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Execute analytical molecular diagnostics investigations and ensure timely delivery of core services.
  • Validate and verify new techniques and tests, particularly NGS and ddPCR for haematological and solid tumours.
  • Name‑own daily technical and analytical work, maintaining high quality standards.
  • Plan and collaborate on complex activities with team members to achieve reliable service.
  • Supervise junior staff and contribute to staff training programmes.
  • Develop and maintain IT systems and data management related to molecular diagnostics.
  • Support quality assurance, laboratory accreditation compliance, and equipment maintenance.
  • Participate in departmental training programmes and quality improvement initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • BSc degree in Biological Sciences or Genetics.
  • Extensive post‑graduate experience in molecular diagnostics techniques.
  • Voluntary registration with The Science Council (RSci) is desirable.

Person Specification:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft software and in‑house IT systems.
  • Analytical and data‑analysis competency for scientific calculations.
  • Capability to troubleshoot simple day‑to‑day problems and apply corrective actions.
  • Aware of organisational and logistical issues impacting service delivery.

Personal Qualities:

  • Self‑confident and contributory in laboratory meetings.
  • Ability to work unsupervised and adapt flexibly to changing workload.
  • Enthusiastic about the role and committed to team working.

Specific Experience:

  • Full understanding of laboratory health & safety procedures.
  • Experience with all areas of a diagnostic laboratory and following SOPs.
  • Knowledge of EQA & IQA implications and ability to take corrective actions.
  • Understanding of CPA/UKAS standards.
  • Understanding of the relationship between laboratory investigations and clinical practice.
  • Ability to extrapolate from basic information to plan additional investigations.
