Working under the supervision of the Clinical Nurse Specialist and Advanced Nurse Practitioner team, the post holder will provide clinical and pathway coordination support within the nurse-led Urology Diagnostics and Active Surveillance Service. The role combines direct patient care with pathway management, supporting patients throughout their diagnostic journey and acting as a key point of contact for patients, carers and the multidisciplinary team.
Main duties of the job:
- The post holder will play a key role in the quality assurance of suspected urological cancer referrals. This will include reviewing referrals to ensure all required clinical information is available prior to clinical triage, liaising with GP practices and other external providers to obtain missing information, and working across multiple IT systems to support the accurate and timely booking of investigations and appointments.
- Support pathway coordination and cancer tracking processes to ensure patients progress efficiently through the diagnostic and treatment pathway.
- Close liaison with the clinical team, Cancer Services and Patient Pathway Coordinators to support timely decision-making, minimise delays and help ensure compliance with national cancer waiting time standards.
- Support the implementation, coordination and ongoing monitoring of the QUIC pathway.
- Ensure that the operational processes underpinning the pathway are functioning effectively, that agreed milestones are met, and that the service continues to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care.
- Support administrative processes, monitor pathway activity, identify potential delays or issues, and escalate concerns appropriately.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities:
- Coordinate referrals, investigations, appointments and follow-up care within the QUIC pathway.
- Review referrals, obtain missing clinical information and support cancer tracking to ensure patients progress efficiently through the pathway.
- Undertake venepuncture, uroflowmetry and bladder scanning, recording and interpreting results within agreed protocols.
- Assist with flexible cystoscopy and transperineal prostate biopsy procedures, including patient preparation, procedural support and post-procedure care.
- Provide patients with information and education regarding investigations and procedures.
- Maintain accurate records across relevant clinical and administrative systems.
- Monitor pathway performance, identify delays and escalation concerns appropriately.
- Support audit, service evaluation and quality improvement projects.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of the Urology Diagnostics and Active Surveillance Service.
Person specification:
- GCSE English Language and Mathematics (Grades A-C) or equivalent NVQ3 or care certificate.
- Evidence of continued role development.
- Willingness to undertake learning and development courses.
- NVQ4 plus additional training to diploma level equivalent, or equivalent through short courses.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience working as a Support Worker in Urology AfC or Senior Cancer Coordinator Band 4.
- Experience in coordinating a patient workload.
