The Estates Department operates and maintains energy and environmental resources, controls, electrical and mechanical services providing power, lighting, heating, air conditioning to wards, outpatients and operating theatres. Estates directly impacts on patient welfare, frontline clinical care, infection prevention and control and energy efficiency and sustainability across the Estates Trust. We have an exciting opportunity for a committed highly self‑motivated individual. The Royal Marsden is looking for a Building Services Craftsman (Electrical) to join the Estates Team in Sutton. This is a highly valuable broad ranging role, which will expose the Building Services Craftsman (Electrical) to the whole range of Estates services including mechanical, electrical, building & energy control systems and project management. The candidate must be highly proactive in all aspects of training and work undertaken, engage in active discussions about skills, techniques, methods and approach to tasks in order to develop to their full potential. Behaviour at all times must be conducted in a professional manner and consistent with Trust Values.
Main duties of the job:
- Work proactively with and support the Supervisor in delivering an optimised service.
- To undertake on‑call and overtime including weekend work from time to time.
- To use their skills and opportunities in the role to enhance the service delivered by the Trust.
- Be part of a team of building services engineers and carry out work and tasks effectively and maximise productivity of this team.
- Maximise value from subcontractors and specialists.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities:
- To understand the workings of engineering services and systems in NHS/Trust premises.
- Ensuring that they are maintained to a high standard and that all plant and equipment are utilised in a safe and efficient manner.
- Identify and communicate defects and action plans to the supervisor through physical inspections, when undertaking normal course of duties, reviewing statutory inspection reports, observations for the way building /plant /equipment is being operated and used and from information in the CAFM system.
- Support the development of quality management processes and capture tasks undertaken in simple flow charts reflecting the steps and procedures used.
- Comply with processes and policies and identify defects and observations and means of achieving continuous improvement.
- Use the CAFM system to receive, update and close off requests and update records.
- Raise a request to cover all activities undertaken to ensure Estates has full visibility of trade staff hours, productivity and activities for trend analysis and continuous improvement.
Person specification:
Education/Qualifications:
- A good standard of education with manual dexterity.
- A recognised trade apprenticeship and educated to City & Guilds/NVQ in core skill, or equivalent working experience and responsibilities.
- Extensive experience working in an Engineering environment, and ability to demonstrate competency through skills gained and training courses.
- Service training certificates.
- Evidence of self‑advancement.
Experience:
- Demonstrable experience working in a service led maintenance environment working on a large variety of engineering services.
- Highly aware of Health & Safety issues as applied to building and engineering functions.
- Experience of working in a large diverse organisation.
- Working in an ISO 9001 framework.
Skills Abilities/knowledge:
- Professional expertise with a logical and systematic approach to work tasks.
- Knowledge of Engineering services in complex buildings and how they are installed and maintained.
- Competence and confidence in dealing with a wide range of engineering equipment within the built environment.
- Knowledge of allied trades.
- Attended courses and experience of using control and BEMS systems.
- Basic Electrical and building /carpentry training and certifications.
- Self‑starter able to work with the minimum of supervision.
Other Requirements:
- Full awareness and understanding of Health and Safety legislation in respect of work function.
- To be prepared to work and be sympathetic to the conditions required when working in patient proximities i.e. working in operating theatres, wards and mortuaries.
- Imaginative outlook, working on own initiative and confident.
