LGV Driver Apprenticeship – Earn While You Learn

Hours/Shifts: The role requires flexibility to work a variety of shifts including a requirement for night driving, weekends and bank holiday working.

What will you do? On the programme you’ll benefit from on-the-job driving experience and complete a range of activities designed to teach you everything you need to know about the role. This includes learning how to:
- Drive large goods vehicles safely and legally.
- Collect and transport mail from our different sites, visiting both our internal and external customers, and moving it to the next stage of the delivery process.
- Safely load and unload parcels and letters delivering to schedule, and maintaining the security of your loaded items throughout the journey.
- Use the latest technology to support you in your role, with the autonomy you need to get the job done efficiently.
Royal Mail operates a 24/7 operation throughout the year. And you will experience working across the different operational shifts including nights and weekends. You’ll split your time between on-the-job training and off-the-job learning with a specialist provider. By the end, you’ll have your LGV licence and the confidence to take on the road.

Who can apply? To join the programme, you’ll need:
- A full UK manual car licence.
- GCSEs at Grade C / 4 or above in Maths and English (or equivalent qualifications), or you’re happy to complete Functional Skills qualifications alongside your apprenticeship.
- To meet the minimum age requirement of 21.
- A positive attitude and willingness to learn.
- To pass assessments and medical checks - you’ll need to pass an eye test and a DBS check to train as an LGV Driver.
No experience? No problem. We’ll give you everything you need to succeed.
Please note: If you already hold an LGV licence, you will not be eligible for this apprenticeship. Instead, please revisit the Royal Mail Careers site and apply for one of our LGV Driver roles.
What happens after? Once qualified, you could:
- Become a full-time LGV Driver.
