In this hands-on role, you lead automation projects at the Midlands Super Hub, serving as the go-to expert for AGV systems and related safety-compliant improvements. You will guide, mentor and train teams while driving fault finding, process optimisation and innovative solutions to enhance fleet performance. Your work directly supports automation goals, safety standards and continuous improvement across site operations. Responsibilities
- Act as the go-to expert for automation systems and provide technical leadership on complex engineering challenges
- Lead small modifications to the AGV fleet, including system upgrades and design reviews with safety compliance
- Provide technical leadership and support to engineering teams solving complex problems
- Mentor and train engineers and technicians on best practices, systems knowledge, and safe work
- Drive continuous improvement through process optimisation, fault finding, root cause analysis, and corrective actions
- Ensure compliance with industry regulations and internal quality/safety management systems
- Support safety audits, risk assessments, inspections, and regulatory reviews from technical and compliance perspectives
- Collaborate with suppliers, contractors, and consultants to resolve technical issues with safety integration
Key requirements
- HNC/HND in electrical and mechanical (essential)
- Degree in engineering (level 6) (desirable)
- Engineering technical leadership experience
- Experience leading and training teams of engineers
- Experience with Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) including integration, diagnostics, and performance optimisation
- Good understanding of fleet management systems for AGV coordination, path control, and load management
- Ability to solve complex engineering problems and deliver safe, innovative solutions
- Experience with PLC systems (Siemens S7, SIMATIC, SIMOVE, CODESYS)
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, MATLAB, SCADA, CMMS
- Knowledge of codes/standards (ASME, IEEE, ISA, NFPA, API, ISO)
- Strong focus on safety culture and risk management
- Continuous improvement experience, including root cause analysis and data interpretation
- Working knowledge of SCADA; PUWER Assessor and IOSH Managing Safety qualifications (willing to gain)
