This is a key leadership role where you'll bring together people, technical expertise and operational performance to ensure our fleet remains safe, legally compliant and available to support the wider Royal Mail network.
Leading around 25 colleagues across the cluster, you'll create a consistent, high-performing maintenance operation across multiple locations. Whether you're an established manager or an experienced automotive professional ready to take the next step into a broader leadership role, this is an opportunity to develop your leadership career while making a real impact within one of the UK's largest fleet operations.
About the Role
As Fleet Workshop Manager, you'll have accountability for maintenance performance across Skipton, York, Hull and Scarborough, ensuring each site operates safely, efficiently and in line with legal and operational requirements. You'll plan resources across the cluster, maintain consistent standards and ensure maintenance activity supports vehicle availability and the needs of our operational customers.
People leadership is central to the role. You'll provide visible and consistent leadership across each location, coaching and developing colleagues while setting clear expectations around safety, performance and customer service. You'll also build strong relationships with operational customers, Fleet colleagues and trade union representatives, bringing teams together and leading change and continuous improvement across the cluster.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead safe and legally compliant maintenance operations across the cluster, ensuring vehicles, colleagues and premises meet required safety and roadworthiness standards.
- Plan maintenance, people and resources effectively across multiple sites to maximise vehicle availability, efficiency and customer service.
- Lead, coach and develop colleagues, creating consistent standards and an engaged, high-performing team across the cluster.
- Drive performance across safety, legal compliance, cost, people, quality and customer service measures.
- Lead operational change, quality standards and continuous improvement activity across all locations.
- Build effective relationships with operational customers, Fleet stakeholders and trade union partners to resolve issues and deliver sustainable improvements.
About You
You're an experienced vehicle maintenance professional who combines strong technical knowledge with the ability to lead and influence others. You may already have formal management experience, or you may have developed your leadership capability through supervising, coaching, mentoring or supporting colleagues within a workshop or maintenance environment.
You'll be able to organise and prioritise activity across multiple locations, taking ownership of issues and making clear, considered decisions. You understand the importance of maintaining consistent safety, compliance and performance standards across dispersed teams and can balance the different priorities of each site. You'll also be passionate about developing people, improving performance and building positive working relationships with the operational customers you support.
What You'll Bring
- An IMI Level 3 qualification in Light or Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair, or an equivalent advanced-level qualification.
- Strong vehicle maintenance industry knowledge, ideally within commercial vehicles, fleet or dispersed maintenance operations.
- Good knowledge of vehicle compliance, roadworthiness requirements and road transport legislation.
- Evidence of leading, coaching, supervising or developing others through formal management or broader leadership responsibilities.
- Good planning and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise activity across multiple locations.
- Effective stakeholder management, problem-solving and continuous improvement capability.
A full driving licence is required, together with the flexibility to travel regularly between sites across the cluster.
Role Impact
You'll lead approximately 25 colleagues across Skipton, York, Hull and Scarborough, with responsibility for creating a consistent and effective maintenance operation across the cluster.
Your leadership will directly influence fleet safety, legal compliance, maintenance quality, cost and vehicle availability. Just as importantly, you'll ensure colleagues across each location feel connected, supported and clear on expectations, while providing operational customers with a reliable and responsive maintenance service.
