About us

Five centuries in business has made Royal Mail more than a household name. We connect companies, customers and communities across the country, delivering a one‑price‑goes‑anywhere, universal postal service to more than 29 million addresses across the UK. Our market is changing, but as one of the UK’s leading companies we are focused on achieving our vision of being recognised as the best delivery company in the UK and across Europe. We want to be more commercial, flexible and efficient and are employing our strong brand and a range of new products and services to achieve this. You need excellent communication, numerical and writing skills for the purpose of communicating effectively with the police or other government agencies. You’ll be expected to maintain concentration as you complete repetitive tasks. You should have excellent observation skills to interrogate mail by profiling and x‑ray screening. You will decipher and evaluate computer screen images so you can identify prohibited and threatening items, including explosives, incendiary and other devices.

You will calibrate screening machines to DfT standards and must successfully pass a DfT approved Level E course and an Ishihara colour blindness test.

Pay: £583.64 (National), quoted amounts are per annum for full‑time hours, pro‑rata for part‑time hours.

We are looking to offer permanent contracts.

This is a part‑time vacancy only. If you are successful with your application and currently work full‑time hours, you will be expected to reduce to part‑time hours.

Additional Benefits

  • Shift allowance for working unsocial hours
  • Holiday entitlement starts at 22 days on entry, increasing with service (pro‑rata)
  • Contributory pension scheme after qualifying period
  • Corporate discounts
  • Development opportunities
  • Excellent parental leave policy
  • Full uniform provided

PLEASE NOTE: This role requires you to work in a high‑security environment. If successful at interview, you can typically expect to have a waiting period of up to 16 weeks while your application goes through our screening process (which includes a requirement for RMG to obtain 5‑year referencing). If invited to interview, we will require you to submit details of what you have been doing (activity) over the past 5 years and between each activity, there must not be a gap of more than 14 days. If you have had a gap between work then please explain this by writing for example “Gap – looking for work”.
