Role Purpose
The GCP Cloud Engineer is a handsβon technical role responsible for the deployment, support and continuous improvement of GCP environments. The role is focused on execution, automation, reliability, service quality and operational governance.
Working within established architectures, standards and policies, the role plays a key part in cloud operations, service management and supplier governance, ensuring GCP services meet agreed service levels and operational requirements. The role collaborates closely with internal delivery teams, service management functions and external suppliers.
Key Responsibilities
- GCP Engineering & Platform Operations
- Build, configure, and operate GCP infrastructure and platform services to support business workloads.
- Deploy and support GCP services across compute, networking, storage, identity, and PaaS.
- Support and enhance GCP landing zones and shared cloud platform components.
- Take ownership of the operational health of GCP environments.
- Infrastructure as Code & Automation
- Develop, maintain, and execute Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform, Ansible, etc.
- Deliver changes through automated pipelines, ensuring consistency and repeatability.
- Increase automation across build and run activities to reduce manual effort and improve reliability.
- Cloud Operations & Reliability
- Operate GCP environments day to day, including proactive monitoring and fault resolution.
- Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure and platform issues in production and non-production environments.
- Support availability, performance, and resilience objectives for critical services.
- Contribute to incident resolution and technical root cause analysis, with a strong focus on prevention.
- Monitoring, Observability & Optimisation
- Implement and maintain monitoring, logging, and alerting using GCP monitoring, Log Analytics, and related tools.
- Identify and remediate reliability, performance, and capacity issues.
- Monitor GCP consumption and costs, highlighting optimisation opportunities and inefficiencies.
- Security & Platform Governance
- Implement GCP security controls including RBAC, identity, network security, and access management.
- Apply governance standards such as policies, tagging, and configuration controls within build and run activities.
- Support audit and assurance activities through accurate configuration and documentation.
- Supplier Collaboration & Technical Oversight
- Work with managed service providers and cloud partners supporting GCP environments.
- Act as a technical counterpart to suppliers during operational issues and platform changes.
- Support service quality through technical input into reviews, escalations, and improvement actions.
- Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing
- Active contributor to Cloud Centre Of Enablement forum (CCOE)
- Work closely with DevOps, SRE, and application teams to ensure reliable cloud services.
- Provide technical guidance and support to internal engineers.
- Work closely with Architecture, Cyber and Product teams.
Key Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in leading cloud engineering teams and product operating model ways of working.
- Strong technical knowledge of public cloud platforms (Azure, AWS is advantageous but not essential) and associated services.
- GCP certifications.
- Expertise in DevOps, SRE, and Cloud Ops frameworks.
- Experience managing hybrid delivery models with internal teams and managed service partners.
- Familiarity with IaC tools (Terraform, Ansible) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Exposure to FinOps and cloud cost optimisation.
- ITIL Foundation or equivalent desirable.
- Experience implementing observability tools and practices (e.g. Grafana, AppDynamics, Datadog, Dynatrace, ELK stack).
- Implementation of cost management reporting in cloud environments.
- Strong experience of supplier/ partner management.
