We have an exciting opportunity for a Herbarium Curator (From Roots to Records project) to join our team at the RHS 1851 Royal Commission Herbarium, the UK’s largest herbarium dedicated to cultivated plants, located in our new state‑of‑the‑art facilities in the Hilltop building at Wisley.
The RHS herbarium specialises in dried cultivated plant specimens that are documented on a database. The collection comprises about 101,000 herbarium plant specimens and 45,000 photographic slides, prints and paintings, with roughly 1,000 new items added annually.
From Roots to Records is a two‑year project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund to expand the RHS Herbarium and make its collections available to researchers and the public online. The project will focus on documenting approximately 1,000 priority plants from South‑West England and Wales, many of which are at risk of extinction or have cultural significance.
Overview of the Role
- Support the collecting teams by accessioning new collections, databasing specimens and producing labels.
- Process and dry/dry specimens for inclusion in the herbarium.
- Transcribe a range of different handwriting accurately for database entries.
- Apply practical knowledge of plant names and botanical nomenclature.
- Use and maintain databases pertinent to biological collections.
- Provide a valuable resource to support research for the Cultivated Plant Diversity department.
Qualifications
- Practical experience in plant names and botanical taxonomy.
- Proficiency in transcribing handwriting from field notes.
- Knowledge of biological collections databases.
- Plant collecting skills and field experience.
Employment Details
- Fixed‑term post for 3 days per week.
- Part‑supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
