This is an opportunity for a Senior Engineer with approximately 10+ years of experience, wanting to join an engineering consultancy in a globally recognised Maritime Engineering team based in Brighton or Exeter. This role requires knowledge and experience of the design and installation of dock and/or lock gates.
This role will provide you the opportunity to drive our business agenda with a key focus on international shipyards and defence facilities. Following continued success within the defence and international shipyard sectors, Haskoning are expanding their current Exeter and Brighton team through the growth of the maritime business.

Our global Maritime team are over six hundred strong and are at the forefront of innovative international maritime planning, design, and development. We are multi-disciplinary experts that work on international projects to create successful ports, shipyards, and maritime infrastructure worldwide.
Examples of recent projects include:
- the design of a lock for a new port in India with sliding caisson gates
- the design of the newest, largest, and most technically advanced shipyard in the Middle East with three dry docks covering an area of over 1,000 hectares
- above and below water assessment of a set of dock gates in the North East of England
- providing continuous significant support to our various UK Naval Bases
If you’re an Engineer with dock/lock gate, floating pontoons, or other similar floating structure experience and you are looking to work on globally significant projects, this role would provide you a great opportunity to work on some amazing world class projects. This role will provide great exposure to local and global projects alike, whilst working with the leading professionals within the Shipyard sector.
Note, some of our clients require our staff to meet specific government Security Clearances before working on and having access to certain documents and projects, which will be a requirement of the job. We will pay for all necessary checks.
Job Responsibilities
- Prepare designs and analyses for maritime and associated structures, from initial concepts through to detailed designs, including the structural design of dock and lock gates.
- Collect and collate design data.
- Carry out inspections and surveys.
- Produce design calculations, check and review calculations produced by others.
- Produce outline models, drawings, and details for CAD (in Revit environment if you can but detailed drafting/modelling by modellers), check and review these prior to issue.
- Prepare draft Bills of Quantities, Contract Documents and Specifications.
- Prepare reports and presentations.
- Undertake engineering analyses and reporting.
- Provide engineering judgement and advice; contribute to preparation of study reports.
- Manage and direct more junior staff.
- Coach junior staff in technical matters.
- Project Manager for small and medium sized projects.

- Civil or Structural Engineering Degree (or equivalent).
- Chartered member of a relevant institution, e.g. CEng MICE or CEng MIStructE or working towards.
- Professional experience in heavy civils projects.
- Experience in the design of floating steel structures such as dock and lock gates and pontoons, or other similar structures is essential.
- Experience in reinforced concrete design desirable but not essential.
- Retaining wall and piling design experience desirable but not essential.
- Willing to travel occasionally throughout the UK and overseas.
