Locum Consultant in Clinical Microbiology & Infection

Overview

An exciting opportunity for a full time Consultant in Medical Microbiology / Consultant in Infection to join a team of 4 consultants at North Middlesex Hospital, London. This is a 10 PA locum post. The successful candidate will join four existing consultants (3.5 WTE) and participate in a 1:5 out of hours on-call rota with prospective cover at a category A rating (5%). Applications are welcome from those approaching their CCT, as well as experienced consultants. The appointee will take on a co-Lead role for an area to support colleagues and provide cross cover when necessary. There is openness to job share or part-time arrangements and flexibility to meet individual needs.

Responsibilities

• Provide consultant and specialist advice for North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust in Infectious Diseases and complex infections.
• Clinical infection consultation and antibiotic stewardship responsibilities within the service.
• Co-Lead an area to support colleagues and provide cross cover when necessary.
• Participate in a 1:5 out of hours on-call rota with prospective cover for category A cases (5%).
• Collaborate with microbiology, virology and infectious disease colleagues across North Central London and with UCH Virology on genomic analysis and weekly MDT discussions.
• Contribute to education and training as part of an established postgraduate clinical training site (Core Infection Training / Specialist Infection Training / HIV).
• Support and participate in the hub laboratory model (Health Service Laboratories) and on-site rapid response laboratory activities, including engagement with laboratory practice and site-specific processes.
• Engage in infection service delivery aligned with patient needs, including HIV and tuberculosis care at NMUH and the surrounding region.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Member of the Royal College of Pathologists (or equivalent).
• Hold or be eligible for specialist registration; consideration given to candidates within 6 months of award of CCT.
• Experience with infectious diseases and complex infections as part of the clinical case mix.
• Ability to work within a culturally diverse and socially deprived population setting and to contribute to service development and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

The microbiology department is centralised in a Hub laboratory (Health Service Laboratories) with a newly built rapid response laboratory on site since June 2016, and collaborates with infection colleagues across North Central London and with UCH Virology on weekly genomic discussions.
