Job Description

New Work Associate

The New Work Associate will be a critical artistic voice within the team, working closely with the Artistic Director to develop exciting ideas that inform the programme and new artistic identity of the Theatre as it builds towards, and celebrates, its 50th Anniversary in 2026.

The role will initiate and lead on a diverse range of new work projects and artist development activities. They will support the Artistic Director in their work, and will be responsible for driving the talent development of the most exciting, relevant and dynamic new work projects for the Theatre. The New Work Associate will commission new writing, devising work, adaptations of classics and the development of new musicals, and will focus on growing new and more representative audiences for the Theatre. Critically, the New Work Associate will deliver the Bruntwood Prize for Playwrighting, and in collaboration the Artistic Director will shape how this evolves to strategically shape the Theatre’s artistic offer. They will also collaborate with other relevant partners and envision how we grow in response to the changing needs of the sector.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of 5 years’ professional experience in a senior creative role in the Arts. They will have experience in script-reading, commissioning new work, dramaturgy and script development. They will have experience of working directly with writers and other artists on the artistic process, and can work successfully and collaboratively within a team. The successful candidate will have a demonstrable commitment to the growth of representation within the Arts and a strong understanding of the current social, cultural and political Arts landscape.
