We are seeking an experienced theatre director to join our fast-paced artist-led team, to deliver a portfolio of ambitious artistic projects planned for the Theatre\’s 50th anniversary year and beyond.

The Associate Director will be a critical artistic voice within the team, working closely with the Artistic Director to development and deliver world-class theatre and productions. They will collaborate with the artistic team to create, develop, coordinate and evaluate existing and new projects and contribute to programming a year-round repertoire of dynamic and impactful work both on and off our stages. The role will provide critical support to directors, companies and creative teams throughout a production’s life cycle across all our spaces though attendance at read throughs, rehearsals, dress rehearsals, previews and press nights. The Associate Director will also work closely with the New Work Associate and Producing team to offer a range of opportunities for artists and our talent development programmes, collaborating with other relevant partners and to envision how this grows in response to the changing needs of the sector.

The successful candidate will be a highly-driven creative who is passionate about the classics, new work and shaping a new artistic chapter at the Royal Exchange. They will have experience of directing productions of quality and ambition and will have directed their own work at mid to large-scale (five professional productions minimum). The successful candidate will have excellent inter-personal, written and verbal communication skills, hold an energetic and self-motivated approach to work, and will be able to manage a busy and diverse workload within a dynamic environment. They will have experience of working directly with all artists on the artistic process, and can work collaboratively within a team. The successful candidate will have a demonstrable commitment to the growth of representation within the Arts and a strong understanding of the current social, cultural and political Arts landscape.
