Role Summary

The Waste department at the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a Waste Operative. We seek enthusiastic, motivated individuals passionate about helping the Trust achieve its sustainability goals. To provide efficient collection of hazardous, clinical, domestic, and recycling waste streams within the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital Wonford and external sites covered by the Trust. To provide a collection service for used and soiled linens for the Linen Services Department.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the Waste Team at Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Below are more details about the Waste team’s roles and responsibilities:

  • Learn routine work procedures through instruction, practice, and short training sessions, under the guidance of Waste Supervisors and Line Managers.
  • Proficiently handle, transport, and decant all waste streams following departmental policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Keep ward and department disposal cupboards clear and ensure waste remains segregated during transportation.
  • Operate relevant vehicles and trailers within the hospital and external sites, conducting daily maintenance checks and reporting defects.
  • Participate in weekly cleaning of electric vehicles, trailers, and vans.
  • Ensure clinical waste containers are locked and properly tagged with the correct waste stream colour coding.
  • Clean domestic waste bins as requested.
  • Handle, transport, and decant soiled linen in accordance with regulations and policies.
  • Sort and prepare waste for collection by contractors.
  • Engage actively in personal development and training.

No prior experience is necessary, as training will be provided while you work.

Working Pattern: 37.5 hours per week, shifts from 06:00 – 14:00, 08:00 – 16:00, or 14:00 – 22:00, including weekends and public holidays.

Interview Date: 9th July 2025

Salary: The salary reflects the Agenda for Change 2025/6 rates, including a 3.6% pay award to be implemented later this year. If you join before the implementation, the backdated pay will be provided. Until then, salaries are based on the 2024/5 pay bandings.
