Specialist Doctor in Eldercare & Stroke in Truro

The Eldercare and Stroke team are seeking a Specialist Doctor to join the team and support the management of Acute Frailty, Orthogeriatric, Parkinson’s and Eldercare inpatients at Royal Cornwall Hospital.

Responsibilities

• Maintain the highest clinical standards in the care of Acute Frailty, Orthogeriatric, Parkinson’s and Eldercare inpatients.
• Provide outpatient and inpatient care, including assessment, management, and continuity of treatment.
• Offer expert advice and guidance to multidisciplinary team members.
• Take day‑to‑day responsibility for Eldercare patients, such as those with femoral fractures, in line with national and local guidelines.
• Teach and train junior doctors, medical students and allied health professionals.
• Ensure active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
• Participate in departmental and Trust matters concerning clinical governance, patient safety, quality improvement and audit.
• Attend departmental meetings and review sessions as required.
• Adhere to the weekly timetable, with potential out‑of‑hours or weekend coverage.

Qualifications

• GMC Registration with a full licence to practice.

Experience

• Demonstrated ability to clinically evaluate, prioritize differential diagnoses, initiate management plans and adjust treatment based on patient outcomes.

Practical and Intellectual Skills

• Possess subject‑specific competence, including knowledge, skills and behaviours relevant to the role.
• Navigate complexity and uncertainty in patient care using senior clinical decision‑making skills within local clinical governance frameworks.
• Communicate effectively, share decision‑making with patients, relatives and carers, and promote a person‑centred approach to care, including self‑management support.
• Demonstrate key clinical skills around consent, humane interventions, safe prescribing and safe use of medical devices.
• Act promptly when patient safety or quality issues arise, and raise concerns through clinical governance systems when necessary.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary and interprofessional teams to manage risk and issues across organisations and settings, respecting the roles of other health professionals.

• Understand leadership responsibilities as a clinician and exhibit appropriate leadership behaviour, managing unfamiliar, complex or unpredictable situations and building confidence and collaboration with others.
