Royal Cornwall Hospital invites applications for a Consultant Nephrologist. Join our forward thinking and dynamic team in a 10.5 PA post that includes the opportunity to perform renal biopsies and tunnelled lines.

The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust is the biggest provider of healthcare services in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Our three main sites are Royal Cornwall Hospital Truro, St Michael's Hospital Hayle and West Cornwall Hospital Penzance. The Trust employs 5,000+ staff, has a budget of around £380 million and 750 beds. We work with health and social care organisations including NHS Kernow and NHS England to ensure local healthcare needs are met. We provide acute medical, surgical and specialist services to a population of around 500,000 which increases significantly during holiday periods. The Trust has teaching hospitals status as part of the University of Exeter Medical School. Keeping at the forefront of medical advances, we continually develop clinical services and are committed to maximising the range of specialist care offered locally.

Main duties of the job:

  • In conjunction with colleagues, the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of nephrology illness in all patients; ensuring they are seen and managed.
  • Participation in the nephrology consultant rota, ensuring uncompromised cover for annual leave and other absences and the effective functioning of the service.
  • Provision of advice (through ward referrals) on nephrology cases admitted under the general medicine.
  • Investigation and treatment of nephrologist outpatient referrals.
  • Commitment to maintaining your own continuing professional development (CPD) and lifelong learning, with support and time provided to keep up to date with annual CPD requirements.
  • Completion of the necessary administrative duties associated with the care of patients to a high standard.
  • Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels.
  • Participation in the education and training of junior doctors, medical students, nurses, paramedics and general practitioners and the training and assessment of specialist registrars rotating through the department.

Person Specification:

  • Registration: Full GMC Registration with a License to practice. Entry on the GMC Specialist Register within six months of interview.
  • Qualifications: An appropriate higher Nephrology CCT qualification.
  • Experience: Broad general experience in nephrology.
  • Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; adapts style depending on audience.
