Overview

The role involves extracting relevant information from patient records, discussing queries with clinicians or other clinical coding team members and translating diagnoses, procedures and interventions into clinical codes using national classifications (ICD10 & OPCS4), adhering to all national standards and conventions. The information Clinical Coders produce is used to report on patient outcomes, improve patient care and ensure the Trust is appropriately paid for the treatments provided to patients admitted to hospital.

Responsibilities

  • Assign clinical codes using the Patient Administration System (PAS) and a clinical coding Encoder.
  • Work to deadlines and set timeframes.
  • Collaborate with a variety of staff including Clinicians, Commissioning, Performance and Business Intelligence, Data Quality, Medical Records, Ward Clerks and other areas within the Trust.

  • Successful candidates will attend a 25-day National Clinical Coding Standards course and progress through an in-house training programme, including an internal assessment before sitting an accredited clinical coding exam which can accelerate progression towards band 4 once requirements are signed off.

Training & Career Pathway

At the start of the training pathway you will attend a national clinical coding standards course to establish the basics in coding. As experience builds, you will undertake our in-house training and an internal assessment before taking the accredited clinical coding exam, with progression towards band 4 upon completion of all job description requirements.
