The Royal College of Art is seeking a Research Contracts Manager to support its world-class research and knowledge exchange (RKE) activities. About the Role
As Research Contracts Manager, you will play a pivotal role in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a diverse range of research agreements with partners including universities, industry, commercial organisations, and government bodies. You will ensure that contractual terms align with RCA policies while managing risk effectively and enabling impactful research collaborations. This exciting permanent role is based in Battersea/hybrid, working 21 hours per week.
You will also be responsible for designing and implementing efficient processes for managing research and knowledge exchange contracts, ensuring compliance with internal and external reporting requirements. Your expertise will help researchers and project teams navigate complex agreements, securing the best outcomes for RCA.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft, review, and negotiate various research-related agreements, including funding and collaboration contracts, NDAs and data-sharing agreements.
- Provide clear, pragmatic advice to RCA staff, translating complex legal terms into actionable guidance.
- Develop and maintain model agreements tailored to RCA’s unique research needs.
- Safeguard RCA’s intellectual property while ensuring opportunities for future research dissemination and commercialisation.
- Manage risk assessment and due diligence processes, liaising with external legal advisors on complex cases.
- Design and implement streamlined procedures for contract processing, ensuring efficiency and compliance.
- Track and maintain accurate records of contracts and intellectual property agreements.
- Keep up to date with changes in legal and regulatory frameworks affecting research agreements.
- Deliver training and guidance to academic and professional staff on best practices in research contracting.
About You
We are looking for an experienced professional with:
- A strong background in research contracts and legal agreements, ideally within a higher education or research environment.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
- A keen analytical mindset, able to assess and mitigate risks while enabling productive collaborations.
- Proven ability to manage multiple contracts efficiently, balancing competing priorities.
- Familiarity with intellectual property rights, research funding terms, and compliance frameworks.
