Our team of talented Paintings Conservators is responsible for all conservation activities relating to the paintings displayed within the Royal residences as well for loans from the Paintings collection. Immersing yourself in this fascinating collection, you will assess condition, carry out and document conservation treatments using the most appropriate methods and materials.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conserve, clean and restore paintings, supported by art historical research, technical and scientific analysis, using the most appropriate methods and materials at all times.
  • Fully assess paintings in the collection, compiling condition reports and determining any conservation needed, maintaining clear and accurate conservation records using the central database.
  • Contribute to the Royal Collection’s exhibition programme through the planning and execution of necessary treatments.
  • Provide expert guidance to ensure paintings are stored, transported and displayed correctly.
  • Share and promote the work of the department, delivering talks and providing material for our website.

A qualified conservator with a post-graduate degree in paintings conservation, along with significant practical experience, ideally within a museum or heritage environment. Familiar with a wide range of materials and techniques, you’ll have an excellent understanding of the principles underpinning conservation best practice. You’ll be confident approaching various conservation scenarios, able to problem solve and deliver high quality treatments while meeting project deadlines.

With excellent written and verbal communication skills, you’ll be able to provide clear documentation of your work and collaborate effectively with colleagues across different teams. With an eye for detail and with strong organisational skills, you’re used to working independently and managing your own workload. And with your excellent IT skills, including experience with collections management systems and MS Office, you’ll possess the ability to manage data, maintain records, and produce reports.
