Royal Caribbean Group’s Global Marine Operations has an exciting career opportunity for a full-time Manager, Expedition Safety reporting to the AVP, Safety Standards and Improvement. This position will work onsite in Weybridge, England.

Position Summary

In this position, you would be responsible for developing, implementing, and sustaining shipboard safety standards, equipment, procedures, and policies related to expedition safety across all Royal Caribbean Group brands. The position uses data for evidence-based decision making. You would also oversee corrective actions, new regulations, and continuous improvement initiatives related to expedition cruising for the operational safety program. You would need to present outcomes and status updates to senior shipboard officers and shoreside management.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Lead Safety Initiatives: Drive innovation in expedition safety. Keep up-to-date with fleet operations and safety practices. Work towards development of fleet standards around expedition operations appropriate for all RCG brands.
  • Improve Safety Culture: Lead efforts across all stakeholders involved in Expedition cruising including Itinerary, Compliance, Environmental Stewardship, Operations, Hotel, etc. to enhance safety policies and practices. Work closely with crew members and officers on all Expedition ships.
  • Oversee Safety Projects: Lead Expedition Safety task force. Manage projects focusing on expedition operations safety. Ensure team members meet project goals. Oversee the financial and planning aspects of expedition-related safety projects, including implementing new regulations.
  • Streamline Workflows: Use project management tools to align team efforts. Prepare clear reports for senior management.
  • Monitor and Improve Safety Programs: Oversee expedition safety audits/risk assessments addressing site specific complexities across the globe. Regularly update senior management on these programs.
  • Develop Training Programs: Work with the training team to create and update expedition safety training, including compliance with STCW standards.
  • Standardize Solutions: Drive consistent safety solutions across all brands. Participate as subject matter expert in investigating accidents and incidents involving expedition operations with Maritime Compliance group; track internal Global Marine Operations root cause analysis, corrective actions, and follow up on continuous improvement findings.
  • Analyze Safety Data: Monitor and report on safety incidents and compliance. Develop action plans based on data analysis.
  • Stay Informed on Regulations: Keep abreast of international and manufacturer safety regulations.
  • Research and Implement New Technologies: Explore new technologies for improving safety in the expedition environment. Update safety policies and equipment accordingly.
  • Direct Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Provide expertise and direction for equipment and software related to expedition safety. Coordinate with other departments including brand Expedition Operations, Supply Chain and technical services.
  • Support Operational Requests: Advise on safety-related requests from groups and charters.

Qualifications, Knowledge And Skills

Position requires minimum 10 years of shipboard experience in the Expedition industry or equivalent shore side position. Bachelor’s degree or technical graduation, and a Maritime license with shipboard/platform experience required. Familiarity with maritime regulations and safety standards, including SOLAS and ISM Code. Relevant certifications in marine safety, emergency response, or risk management are highly desirable. Advanced knowledge of personal computers within a Windows environment including e-mail, Microsoft Office 365 (word, excel, Power BI, SharePoint, etc.) and related printers and equipment. Excellent ability to communicate effectively with multi disciplines, shipboard and shore-side for problem resolution. Position requires good level knowledge of expedition operations experience on worldwide itineraries. Very good knowledge of SOLAS, STCW, ILO, Classification and Flag requirements and general maritime regulations. Possess excellent time management and organization skills with the ability to multitask and manage in a fast-paced environment. Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to communicate technical material to executive leadership and non-technical audience. Ability to work independently, as well as part of a cohesive team. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to travel throughout the Fleet and spend required time on a variety of vessels.
