Living Collections Registrar

Kew holds the most diverse living plant collection in the world, the scientific value of which hinges on good records. Every research and conservation project and every plant a visitor stops to read about rests on the accuracy of the data behind it. As Living Collections Registrar, you will be the person who keeps that foundation sound. You will look after the records day to day, handle the checks and paperwork that go with moving living material in and out, and act as the champion for data standards, helping colleagues get the best from our records systems and making sure the information behind the collection can be trusted. It is a varied role with a lot of independence, in a place with 260 years of history and a real purpose behind the work. This is a one year fixed-term role, three days a week.

You will hold an NVQ Level 3 or higher in horticulture or a related subject, or an equivalent qualification. You will bring experience of data manipulation and preparation, along with practical experience of asset management, including labelling of physical objects, and working with relational databases or structured data such as spreadsheets. A meticulous approach to record keeping and a close eye for detail are essential. You will lead all data processes for incoming and outgoing material, and use a range of tools to monitor standards and support colleagues where necessary.

A large part of this role is building skills in others. You will design and lead training on our Integrated Collections Management System for horticultural staff, and recruit, supervise and develop volunteers, so relevant experience matters here. You will work under the guidance of the Head of Collection Management, deciding how best to deliver the work set for you and acting as a champion for data standards across the collection. Strong problem solving and clear communication matter throughout. Experience in a botanic or public garden, and knowledge of the rules governing the movement of plant material such as access and benefit-sharing, phytosanitary and plant health requirements, would be an advantage but are not essential.

This role is based at Kew with the option of regular home working, subject to operational requirements.

The salary for this position is£34,216 (pro rata) per annum [Band C]
