In Kensington and Chelsea, we put local people and local businesses at the heart of decision-making, working in partnership with them to provide quality services that are responsive, effective and efficient. Waste reduction and recycling targets are a key area of focus, as achieving high participation both saves the council money and contributes to our climate emergency goals. Communicating our message, however, can sometimes be a challenge in this diverse and densely populated borough – which is where you come in.

The Role

In this frontline role, you’ll be responsible for monitoring and increasing the recycling rate within an area. You’ll get to know your patch inside and out and will engage directly with residents (e.g. through doorstepping) to help them understand recycling issues, increase recycling and tackle recycling contamination. In addition, you’ll monitor collection crews to make sure the right collections are made to the right standards. The role also involves creating bespoke communication materials, delivering presentations to community groups and gathering data on recycling performance. It’s a practical way of sharing your passion for sustainability and environmental protection. And, if you’re looking to work in the environmental sector, it’s an ideal starter role.

About You

A good knowledge of waste reduction, sustainability and recycling issues is essential, as is a genuine commitment to protecting the environment. As there’s a strong customer-facing element, you should expect to be out and about around the borough, ready to knock on doors, engage with residents and solve practical problems. You’ll need to be energetic, personable and persistent, and ready to work with limited supervision. Some early starts, as well as evening and weekend work, will be required, with time off in lieu. Along with good organisation, the ability to compile data and write reports is important.

In return, you can look forward to a package that includes a competitive salary, a high-quality pension scheme and generous annual leave plus bank holidays. We are committed to promoting equality and respecting diversity and welcome applications from all sections of the community. We are a Disability Confident Employer – committed to ensuring that our recruitment and selection process is inclusive and accessible.

The Process

Please upload your CV and cover letter as a single document via the "Easy Apply" button to complete your application. Your cover letter should highlight your relevant experience in relation to the role. Alternatively, you can email both documents to Chris Macdonald at before the closing date.
