About us
Connecting our residents with the people they want to see, and the places they need to go is central to our mission at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. With a focus on putting the wellbeing of our communities and the success of our local businesses at the heart of our work, we know that the delivery of improvements to our streets and spaces is of vital importance, and as such, we are looking for a Senior Transport Planner who shares our ambitions and vision.
The role
Join us in this fascinating work, and you could have a tangible impact on our communities. Through development management and in supporting the delivery of transport policies and projects, you will work closely with planning colleagues to negotiate, secure, and help to deliver place-shaping projects. Seeing to it that proposals will not have a negative impact on traffic, transport networks or highway safety, this work will extend from pre-application engagement all the way through the entire development process. As such, you will take the opportunity to secure financial contributions and advise on infrastructure requirements that will benefit the borough.
We expect you to make creative suggestions on streetscape design, traffic issues, and to identify projects for inclusion in the service’s work programme. In short, you will help us realise our vision of ensuring that our local communities have access to beautiful streets, attractive transport options, and that they are safe and well-connected.
About you
With the objective of improving mobility, safety, and the public realm, this is an exceptional role that will provide you with the chance to extend your expertise in a forward-thinking and highly supportive team. Coming from a transport planning background, we will expect you to have an in-depth knowledge of the transport impacts of development, and you will have the capacity to deal with large developments. With a degree or Masters-level degree in a relevant subject such as Transport Planning, Town Planning or Civil Engineering (or with equivalent experience) you will have a good knowledge of planning policies, government transport and place-shaping policies and initiatives, and relevant legislation such as The Highways Act 1980 and The Town and Country Planning Act 1990.
With the confidence to represent the council at public inquiries, you will enjoy negotiating with developers to secure the best possible outcomes for local residents - so it goes without saying that you will also be capable of securing large contributions. Crucially, you will have great communication skills, and you will be highly organised with the ability to meet deadlines and prioritise tasks.
And while the chance to work on the most interesting streetscape schemes in one of London’s most iconic boroughs is a key part of what makes this role so attractive, so too is the generous benefits package that is further enhanced by hybrid working (with at least three days in the office). So join us and play your part in influencing the direction and outcomes of career-defining projects.
The process
Please include a one page cover letter with your application, outlining your relevant experience for the role. Applications should be submitted by the closing date of Tuesday 2nd June.
