In this vital role, you’ll work directly with residents, offering care, guidance and crisis support that makes a real difference in their lives. What You’ll Be Doing
- You’ll work directly with adults and young people who are experiencing mental health difficulties, considering whether or not they require a formal assessment under the Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA), or whether other least restrictive options are available or appropriate.
- Responding in a timely manner to any MHA requests, managing risks and liaising with other partner agencies in planning any appropriate interventions to ensure that the person and any other parties are safely managed.
- Responding to any urgent referrals that may require to be seen on the day, coordinating the assessment and providing appropriate interventions to meet the needs of the person at that time.
- Attending assessments and acting independently in urgent, high-stakes situations.
- Completing statutory work in a timely manner, attending court for s135(1) warrants, ensuring that a team approach is applied, contributing to the allocated work and ensuring that the service is run both safely and responsively.
- Being a Practice Assessor for AMHP Trainees and supporting newly qualified AMHPs on the rota.
- Linking in with partner agencies and providing guidance and support to them.
What You’ll Bring
- You’re a registered Social Worker with Social Work England, with relevant qualifications and experience in adult mental health settings as an AMHP.
- You’ve worked with people facing a range of mental health challenges, including complex or enduring conditions, and you understand how to balance their rights, needs and risks.
- You have practiced as an AMHP for a minimum of two years with a variety of experience and knowledge with supporting people who may present in crisis.
- You know the legislation inside out – including the Mental Health Act, Care Act, Mental Capacity Act and Children’s Act – and you’re confident in applying it to real-life situations.
- You’re calm under pressure, clear in your communication, and empathetic when it matters most.
- You’re comfortable working independently and as a team player, while also contributing to a supportive, team-oriented environment.
- You value supervision, seek feedback, and want to continue growing in your role.
- You treat every person with dignity and respect, taking a culturally sensitive, whole-person approach.
