Working pattern: Hybrid (3 days per week in the office)

About the Role

As our Corporate Health & Safety Advisor, you’ll be one of the Council’s subject matter experts on health, safety, and welfare matters across multiple directorates.

  • Provide professional, independent health and safety advice to senior leaders, managers, and staff across the council.
  • Champion and implement the council’s health and safety strategy, developing tailored initiatives to drive improvement.
  • Lead audits, assurance programmes, and risk assessments across services to ensure compliance with statutory legislation and the council’s policies.
  • Investigate incidents, identify root causes, and implement measures to prevent recurrence, including advising on regulatory breaches.
  • Support major projects, construction works, and procurement with competent health and safety input, ensuring compliance with CDM Regulations 2015 and other relevant legislation.
  • Coach and mentor staff at all levels, building health and safety capability across the organisation in a wide range of contexts and Council services.
  • Engage with enforcement bodies such as the HSE, providing accurate information and mitigating risks where necessary.
  • Drive continuous improvement by interpreting key safety performance data and leading action plans to reduce risk.

This is a high‑profile and influential role, where you’ll support decision‑making at senior levels and help embed a strong health and safety culture across the council.

About you

You’re a confident and credible health & safety professional who can balance technical expertise with practical delivery.

  • Membership of a professional body such as IOSH or IIRSM.
  • Substantial experience providing occupational health and safety advice in a large, multi‑disciplinary organisation.
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety management systems, auditing, risk assessments, and compliance requirements including asbestos, water hygiene, contractor management, and fire safety.
  • Experience producing clear, concise reports for all levels of management.
  • Ability to communicate complex health and safety information in a practical, understandable way.
  • Excellent influencing, coaching, and mentoring skills.
