Sessional Language Interpreters

Royal Borough of Greenwich is seeking experienced interpreters and translators to support residents accessing local health services and council services. The role delivers face‑to‑face language interpretation, British sign language (BSL) interpretation and document translation in a wide range of languages.

Pay and Working Hours

Pay range is advertised by the Council. Actual remuneration will be based on skills and experience. The standard working week is 35 hours unless otherwise stated. Salary details are available on application.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver professional interpretation and translation services in face‑to‑face settings for council and local health services.
  • Interpret for residents across a broad spectrum of languages, including Cantonese, Kurdish, Spanish, Portuguese, Luganda, Oromo, Tamil, Vietnamese and Yoruba.
  • Collaborate with health and social care professionals to interpret medical and legal contexts where required.
  • Maintain confidential records of interpreting sessions and adhere to Council data protection policies.
  • Participate in regular interviews throughout the year as part of the open advertisement process.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Recognised qualification in Interpreting and Translation to a minimum level of Community Interpreting Level 3.
  • Considerable experience in public service interpreting and translation.
  • Experience working with health or social care professionals is desirable; experience in medical and legal interpreting is an advantage.
  • Proof of language skills and experience in interpreting services, including evidence of proficiency in the selected languages.
  • Full employment history is required. Provide a written explanation of any gaps in employment.
