The Royal Borough of Greenwich is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Highway Inspector to play a key role within our Highways & Traffic team. The role involves supporting the delivery of a safe, efficient, and well-maintained highway network across the borough, working closely with the Highways Maintenance & Improvement Manager, supervising a team of inspectors, ensuring compliance with statutory inspection duties, and driving quality and performance across highway maintenance activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and support a team of Highway Inspectors, including appraisals, 1-2-1s, and performance management
- Undertake audit and quality assurance of safety inspections and monitor performance dashboards
- Ensure inspection routes are accurate, optimised and compliant with statutory requirements
- Plan and refine Safety Inspection Routes (SIRs) across the borough
- Carry out detailed inspections, identify defects, assess urgency, and issue repair instructions
- Oversee works on-site to ensure quality, safety, and compliance with standards
- Manage and respond to insurance claims, including report preparation and court attendance where required
- Support delivery of highway improvement and traffic management schemes
- Lead on enforcement activity, including managing unauthorised highway obstructions
- Liaise with contractors, engineers, utilities, and stakeholders to ensure effective service delivery
- Monitor and control budgets and value for money in works delivery
- Deputise for the Highways Maintenance & Improvement Manager when required
Qualifications
- Proven experience in highway inspections, maintenance, or asset management
- Strong understanding of relevant legislation, codes of practice and safety standards
- Experience of supervising staff and supporting team performance
- Ability to assess defects and determine appropriate and cost-effective solutions
- Experience liaising with contractors and managing works on-site
- Excellent organisational, communication and problem-solving skills
- Confidence handling insurance claims, reports, and stakeholder enquiries
- A relevant qualification in highways, civil engineering, or a related field is desirable.
